Replacing fan on 5770

Thread Starter
I have this model of the 5770 Sapphire.
I have to change the stock fan as sometimes it doesn't spin on boot (I need to manually give it a push), I already tried using some oil but it didn't work. frown.gif
Once I give it a push it works fine though. I would like to replace only the fan, more info in the 4 post.

The 5770 isn't on the list of compatible cards but the 2600/2400 is and the 5770 has the same mounting holes. I installed my Zalman VF1000 onto a 5770, it didn't officially support the 5770 but I used the mounting holes for an older ATi 2600/2400 and it went in perfectly.

The only thing you'll have to worry about is if there are any components protruding from the card that might stop the heatsink making contact with the GPU, if the board is basically flat all around the GPU area it shouldn't be a problem.

Have you thought about replacing the fan only, even if you have to run it's power from another source. Or trying to open up and clean out the fan itself inside, it's not that hard dismantling a fan and putting it back together.

edit,,,

Everything I can find shows it should fit a 5770 but you probably won't be able to plug the fan into the card itself, rather to the PSU so you won't have fan control but it's pretty much silent anyway.

In my experience, if the card is not on the compatibility list, don't risk it.
Theres a chance that it either wont fit properly, or it could damage the card by trying. The HD5770's are not "hot" cards, they don't really need a third party cooler, try replacing the TIM and maybe ramp up the speed of the fan a few points in Afterburner to kick the fan into life.
Have you taken the whole fan apart and oiled it all, sometimes you need to remove a fiddly E-clip to get to the two bearing sleeves.
If that doesn't work, take some pics of the fan as i may have one spare you can have to replace it, you can have it I wont charge you, might need a small donation for shipping though.

I already tried removing the fan and adding some oil but it didn't help, I'll surely try again though.
When adding the oil I noticed that under the sticker there was a sort of lid but it was connected to the fan on 4 points, something like this (I just searched the image, the fan seems the same model as mine). So I decided to leave it alone and let the oil pour in through the small holes.

What do you guys think of changing the fan with [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Chipset-Video-Round-Heatsink/dp/B00006B8EE/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1313227857&sr=1-1"]this[/ame] or [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Universal-VGA-Card-Heatsink/dp/B000EBP6Q8/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1313227857&sr=1-2"]this[/ame]? I was thinking of leaving the stock heatsink (which should be better than the linked ones since it has heatpipes) and replacing only the fan. Will the fan fit? Also the reviews seem positive.
@Jim McNasty
Thank you for the offer but I live in Italy, so I don't think it would be convenient. smile.gif

P.S.
I changed the first post since now I'm more inclined to only change the fan.

This might be a long shot but try installing msi afterburner and ramp the fan speed up to maximum and leave it going for an hour or so, that might clear it and get it back working without you having to dismantle it.
If that doesn't work try and remove that lid/seal (if its molded to the plastic dont!), usually when my fans start playing up i rip the whole thing apart.
If your just dropping oil down that hole, it might not be getting to the necessary parts, also what type of oil are you using, I use WD40 which works well because it cleans as well as lubricates.
Chances are, some dust/gunk has built up in and around the bearing sleeves causing it to stick.
If you can get the lid of, you will probably need to remove a tiny e-clip, once you do that, the fan itself will be easily lifted out, then you can thoroughly clean the whole thing and re-oil it.

If you put some pictures up of the existing fan i can tell you which to buy if you can't fix it yourself or if its crapped out even after trying my method, i cant really tell at the moment.

My fan is similar to the one I've linked before (this). This is the other side.
The fans with which I can replace it are linked in the previous post.
I'll now try MSI AB, thanks. smile.gif

I hate to give bad news but I don't think either of those will fit your cooler, give me an hour or two and I'll have a net search and see if i can find you one that fits.

I tried leaving my fan at 100% with MSI AB but nothing changed, some times the fan doesn't spin on boot. frown.gif
I really don't like to spend money on the video card, since I wanted to change it in a few months with an ATI 7000 or NVIDIA 600 series.
For now I think I'll just leave the side of the case open and give it a manual spin when needed. mad.gif

Have you tried putting a fan right under your gpu fan to help give it a bit of a kick? As in like strapped to your gpu?

No, I haven't tried but as I said before I just give it a spin with my fingers, then it works fine.
