2x MSI 460 Cyclones (768mb) sli attempt fail!

Thread Starter
Hey,

I recently purchased a second MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone OC 768 MB.
I wanted to give sli a go for various reasons....

Along with the card I also purchased a new Cooler Master 750 watt power supply that is sli approved.

I have an Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard with bios ver. 1406 (latest).
I have switched the sli card on the motherboard to "dual video card"
I have also attached the Asus SLI bridge (I have a feeling it could be this) too the two cards

Everything is plugged in and my system has booted up fine, however my computer is not seeing the second card.

I ran 3DMARK11 and it reports back that I only have a single 460 and that sli isn't enabled.

I did some reading and some people have mentioned that in some cases they needed to re-seat their video cards before it worked, and some needed to swap the slots cards occupied. I have done both with no results.

I don't think that the new card is a dud because when it is in the primary PCI-E slot it is out putting video.

Is there anything else I can do to try and get SLI enabled on my current setup? This is my first attempt at it so I am not sure of the troubleshooting paths to take.

Thank you,

Cheers

Did you go into your nvidia display options and actually turn on SLI? When you install a 2nd card, SLI isn't automatically turned on. Check your driver options.

Also make sure you are running the latest drivers, like 275.33 or 280.26

Well, I have been all through the Nvidia Control Panel and I can't find any reference to an SLI option.

Not only that, when I go to "Device Manager > Display Adapters" I only see a single NVIDIA Geforce GTX 460, I should see both I guess?

I am running the latest driver from Nvidia, ver. 280.26

It's almost as if the second PCI-E slot is not working or something...

Yeah something is up, it should definitely say that there are two cards running.

I'm not sure about your motherboard, but it runs SLI natively right? Not sure if motherboards back in the day required some manual switch, or maybe needed to be turned on in bios?

Sorry I can't be of more help/

I had the same problem adding a second 470 to my rig. Second PCIE slot appears to be dead. Running out of options before I call it dead.

Have you tried a single card by itself in that slot?

There is a switch on the motherboard... a big red one that you are supposed to flip and reinsert with the side labeled "Dual Video Card". I have done this and still nothing.

I have reinstalled the drivers with both cards installed... and still I get nothing

I think the second PCI-E slot is toast. I don't even get the card showing up in the device manager. Even if SLI wasn't enabled/working, I think I should still be able to see the second card in the device manager.

This sucks... There's nothing I can do with this card now. Maybe I can find another Socket 755 board with SLI? that is going to be tough!

My second slot is apparently toast, too. Gonna RMA next month after I upgrade to Bulldozer or SB. Then I'll just sell the board.

Yeah I am pretty sure my second PCI-E slot is dead to.

I found another computer at work with two PCI-E x16 slots, put both cards in and the system saw both cards immediately without issue.

Unfortunately the board doesn't support SLI, but at least it saw both cards.

My board is to old to RMA I think, I guess my only option might be to purchase something new... Unless I try and find a good used 755 socket board..

Any suggestions?...

Only 1 suggestion:- Dead or Dirty motherboard SLI selector card
Try taking it out and then clean the 'gold fingers'. And also make sure the slot in the motherboard is clean. Then, reinsert the selector card fully (see pic below - make sure both retention clips are snapped).

A non working selector card could give symptom very similar to a dead 2nd (black) PCIex16 slot.

Have you tried putting the switch back to single card and seeing if the PCIE slot will work with one or both cards (maybe not in SLI, but see em in device manager)?
