[bf3blog]Origin required to play Battlefield 3 - Page 26

To me my decision wont come down to Origin... although I do not like EA, so it definitely doesnt help my decision.
My decision will stem to how good the gameplay is.
Things going for it right now are, massive maps with 32man TEAMs, vehicle and infantry based warfare, class based fighting.

Things that work against it, not giving us true control over dedicated servers. Simplifying the deconstructive environment rather than making it a server side option.
Making map packs part of this bullcrap scheme to get more preorders, effectively alienating anyone who waits to see how good the game actually is before buying it. It also sets the tone to have more map packs to be sold, segmenting the community. BC2 the only paid for DLC was Vietnam, but I don't think they will do they same for BF3. And I also think that the new maps will be part of the basic game, so when you try to join friends, you wont be allowed to play the game.

So unless I see the game is going to be worth every cent of 60bucks I wont buy it. Unfortunately if I buy it after it comes out, then that means it needs to be worth 70bucks... which I doubt it will be.

Another thing to point out is that I have no issues with Origin as a service. Up until now, Steam has been the only real all in one distribution system. So to compare the rise of Origin with the rise of Steam is a fundamentally flawed. Now that Steam is so prevalent, EA is shooting themselves in the foot by forcing one or the other.

Now, I'm no expert on the Steam/EA issues (and as much as people say they are, only EA and Valve really know the extent of the issue) but I would assume had EA really wanted to, they could have put their game on Origin and Steam. As much as people don't like them (either one), I doubt they would have passed up an opportunity to work it out if it were JUST about the DLC. It's obviously about pushing Origin.

Here is what I think EA should have done:
1. Put game on Steam AND Origin but not requiring the other to run
2. DLC gets put out as an 'independent' game, this would allow it to exist on both platforms simultaneously
3. Use this to let people start warming up to Origin rather than force it in your face if you want the game

Once they get a dedicated consumer base on Origin, THEN start to fracture the market. But to force people to install their client for a single game with no clear future on the platform just rubs me wrong. But hey, that's my opinion and I'm sure some people will get all worked up about it.

No we do not, because we respect your decision to buy the game and use a force fed distribution client.

I don't perceive it as a loss, because I will not miss not buying the game. It would have been a nice game to have, but not anything that I will look back and think, "Man I should have bought this." I cannot consider something a loss, if I have no feelings of regret over it. I am disappointed, yes, but definitely not sad or regretful. I see is a non-gain for me and a complete loss for EA and Dice. Besides, the $60 I save from not buying BF3 can now be used towards another game. Again, not a loss and depending on how I look at it, possibly a gain somewhere else.

I guess at the end of the day, it really comes down to how important is a game or gaming to you. To me, gaming is just a hobby. I will not lose any sleep from not playing a game. It is not a loss at all to not play a game or games. I am guessing from your reactions to our consumer decision that gaming is very important to you. To me, there are way more things that are of much greater importance.

I didn't say your opinion was stupid, I said boycotting a game you would've otherwise enjoyed was stupid. If that's your opinion, well, to me that's just plain stupid. It's like choosing not to go to Disney World because I don't like High School Musical, as if that'll make it go away.

That is what you think they should have done because it would benefit you, based upon your views. You also assume that EA wants BF3 to be available on Steam at all.

EA did what they did because it will give their new baby the best start in life.

MILLIONS of people will be buying BF3.

MILLIONS of people will be logging in to Origin to play BF3.

MILLIONS of people will be frequently exposed to their whole game library/deals/whatever as its just a literal click away.

Why would they want many out of those millions to be directed towards another publisher that they compete with in terms of gaming market and soon to be in terms of digital distribution, something they hope Origin to excel at?

Not only that, they're literally paying their competitor to make money on their own game due to Steams market/exposure ability.

However, Battlefield 3 needs little to no help with exposure and with the millions that WILL be buying and purchasing the game, they will have no use for the exposure that steam will bring.

It makes sense for you for EA to do it that way, because that's what you want them to do based upon what you want.

What you want however, is not reality.

That is an inappropriate analogy. Disney Pictures is the publisher that produces High School Musical. It is not a distribution client. That would be Netflix, Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, ect (see aren't choices wonderful?). Disney World is a theme park that is part of the parent Disney corporation. A better example would be, Disney has created a new movie distribution client that you must install on your computer or DVD/Bluray player and you must create an account for before you can watch your movie, regardless of where you bought it from. If I dislike Disney, I would totally pass on that movie. It is fine if you can't accept my opinion. Sometimes the world works that way. Stop trying to insult my opinion however, simply because it disagrees with yours. Do you see me calling your opinion stupid? No I have not.

I guess Ill be picking this up for 360 then. I'm sick of developers/publishers shoving D2D/store software down our throat.

We have Steam, we aren't going to download every damn program out there. Get over it EA.

God, I'm getting sick of PC gaming.

Again, I won't be buying the game, HOPEFULLY to impact the "MILLIONS will be buying" it thing. While I'd love to play the game, I don't appreciate EA forcing Origin with the game.

This is how politicians try to pass their crap. Let's propose a bill that does X (a wonderful, needed thing) but then let's also put in Y (a not-needed, self-serving thing). Do you vote for it to get the good thing or not vote for it to oppose Y?

I'm not saying there is a right answer (though it's clear you think there is one) but I don't feel buying the game sends the message I want to send to EA. As silly as it may sound to you, I'm not going to justify buying this game just because millions of people are doing it and I may not change anything.

So you would rather deal with 24 players vs 64? small maps vs big? garbage gfx and framerate vs 1080p dx11 and 60fps? and on top of that paying 60$ a year for it?

All because of what? a program less intrusive than steam that would take up nothing on your rig?

Yeah im getting tired of PC gamers too, the people that make mountains out of molehills and are more concerned about the launch program for games than the actual game itself. Buying it on console does nothing as EA still gets your money and if it sells more on consoles get used to seeing bad companies instead of proper PC sequels like BF3.
