wat.

Seriously, you are questioning valve, a company that has done nothing but supported the PC and saying that EA, supporter of money making and wrecking franchises is the best thing ever? Seriously?

As for the last page and a half...

gaming is definitely not all about that, but in the near future, that is what "profitable gaming" as a business will be all about.

a bloke that works for my dad is starting up this new online thing, cant go into it at the moment but basically its going to be huge and perhaps revolutionise a part of online gaming and community.

and all the big dogs in the market, and all the recent study into the current market, shows that micro-transactions are the way of the future, and you can bet that more and more devs and games will employ them.

if you want proof of micro-transaction business success, just look at Zynga. i dont care what you think of the crap little facebook games like Farmville and all that (i clearly just expressed my own opinion of them haha) but thanks to micro-transactions, Zynga are turning over billions from a free game.

this is just the beginning. i personally think it could work. micro transactions means cheaper or even free titles from the get go with basic limited options. then users can purchase any extra content that they want for a fee, ranging from very small to ridiculous. but it works, amazingly well.

I've got about 2.5tb of free space atm, I couldn't care less what was on it since I'm not using it.
I do have that 80MiB, in fact, due to running Linux with LXDE, I regularly only use ~700MB (With Firefox, emesene and Deadbeef open) before caching, etc.

It's more I'd rather my RAM is used for something...You know, useful? I don't want 10 different digital distribution programs on my computer, I want one, whether it's Steam, Impulse, Origin or a third party one.

So you would seriously have no qualms about me using your HDD space? Geez, people are dumb these days, we may have heaps of overhead but that doesn't mean we should just let bloat run willy nilly.

Origin is bloated because all I need from it is the ability to download a game and update a game within it.

Seriously, it's not that big of a deal.

Steam is a store with a friends list, so is Origin.
Apart from what JackieJoe said, it was one program.

Compared to now..if I want BF3, TF2, Sins of a Solar Empire installed on my PC, that's already 3 different digital distribution clients I need.

Yes, I have the space and resources to not really notice it...But I honestly would much rather have them used for something y'know, useful? Rather than essentially cloning the same thing 3 times.

A company needs to bring out enough big titles to make it to a succes though, so i'm sure not many will try.
I would not be surprised if Activision comes with their own platform in the future.
I may not like running that many clients, but you have to realize the monopoly position Valve currently has.
Why? So we can waste even more system resources on crap all?

I'd personally much rather a third party that doesn't make a profit out of it owning the whole digital distribution thing.

What we do have beef with is EA, a company that has almost been as despicable as Activision, Crapcom, and Ubisoft, forcing their own game distribution storefront client down on throat in order to play their games, regardless of developer. Yes we understand this is within their own right and there is nothing "wrong" with their business decision, we simply do not like or agree with their decision. We don't like the company or trust the company enough to handle our games. They have a rather piss poor record of listening to their customers.
This! I am still getting BF3, I miss playing BF2 too much not to, but it's both the whole implications of Origin being successful (i.e. Enjoy having an Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, EA, Valve, MS and Sony digital distribution client, most probably with 1-2 games on it) and the fact that EA have been very crappy with customers in the past...Remember the guy that lost access to his legally paid for DA2 because of a few forum posts?

I can foresee that repeating a few times with Origin...EA are worse than Activision, at least Activision admit what they do whereas EA try to play it down until release. (See: Crysis 2)

Sorry to me the only way valve has supported PC gaming RECENTLY is with steam, notice how I am particularly talking about L4D an 8 player game, with a long obsolete engine which looks no different on PC than consoles, at least consoles can do split screen though. Really I cannot find any "pc features" in it. While BF3 seems to offer what pc gamers are asking for, well what people on OCN are asking for.

Also where do you see me saying EA is the best thing ever? This is not so much about supporting EA as supporting DICE who make quality games, also yes I think valve is very overrated.

As for EA being focused on money making, guess what thats every companies focus; I dont support their motives but thats what companies are designed to do. Valve is good as well and if you think for one second thats not their goal your naive. Valve is too comfortable right now, making money of steam and other people's hardwork; why would EA allow this. Maybe if steam had a major competitor to deal with Valve might actually start making some decent games instead of a 50$ portal 2 and a 50$ l4d2 (which generates peanuts compared to their steam revenue)

I'm grabbing this game regardless of the complainers, those worried about resources are rolling with 6GB+ of memory lol. Having competition is great, and there is no changing that there will be more services just like Steam/Origin. My as well get over it now.

1.Well they've been supporting it since they were formed, there is nothing to contradict that.
2. Please stop using the L4D series as an example of how valve is treating us like children, you are looking for problems where there are none. Sure, its only 8 players tops, so? Somehow I don't think 64 player games would work in a zombie game, especially one like L4D. As for the sheer lack of PC features, it had dedicated servers, mod tools(as all source engine games do) and it has regular and free patches/DLC. If that isn't a PC game what is
3. Good to know, you obviously can see my point of view then.... at least I hope.
4. Yes they are all money making schemes in the end, but gaming started out as a niche market, the profits off it were small and you really had to enjoy it to do it. Valve seems to have kept this attitude, even though there is lots of money to be made elsewhere(consoles) even if it was at the expense of the PC experience. Valve has my respect in that aspect, they've always banged the nail right on the head for us PC gamers, unlike any other big developer/publisher.
5. Please get your prices right... keep in mind other publishers sell games for much more too. I find valves pricing very very reasonable.

Their consolization started with the original L4D. While I agree they were great as PC games as well, consoles were in mind with L4D/L4D2. Portal 2 especially.
