Want a SSD, but no SATA 6Gb/s

Thread Starter
So I was looking at deals on SSDs, and I was checking my mobo and noticed I only have SATA 3Gb/s. This basically makes all the new SATA drives (like the crucial M4) useless doesn't it?

But is it worth getting the new generation of SSDs, or stick with the older ones that are cheaper?

SATA 6Gb/s is needed for sequential transfers..... which is really not useful for an OS/app drive. How often do you transfer 1GB files into memory or read/write 1GB files to/from a RAID0?

The random performance is what matters and those won't be bottlenecked by SATA 3Gb/s.

Quite honestly, you won't notice the difference in real-world usage.

If the price difference is only a few dollars, I would spend it for future upgrades.

Yup, I actually ran my M4 as SATA2 on my old asus board for a while. It still was amazingly fast.

I just upgraded my board recently to one with SATA3, and its faster on benchmarks, but I don't really notice anything's faster than it was with SATA2.

That's mostly because going from HDD to SSD is like a huge huge difference... And going from a fast ssd to a faster ssd was less substantial for everyday use... if any at all.

I was limited to 3gb/s too and I decided to get an intel 320, which is a 3gb/s drive. I can tell you it's definitely noticably faster than a mechanical drive.

Why are the Sandforce drives having such horrible reliability problems? I've never had an SSD before and im kinda thinking about my first one, but with the amount of issues they've been having, I think i'd rather stick with my good ol magentic drives

I'm not smart enough to say specifically what is wrong with sandforce's coding, but I'm smart enough to know that Marvell isn't having the same issues.

Go with Crucial.

My drives top out at 550MB/s sequential read speeds due to the controller bottleneck and that's Sata 3Gb/s. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as he doesn't run two in RAID0 shouldn't he be just fine on the sequentials too?

So the Curcial M4 128GB is on sale right now for $194. And the kingston v100 is on sale for $145 AR. The M4 is a much faster SSD, but will I see the difference at SATA 3Gb/s?
