I'm still not sold on SSD's....

Ok, as im starting to refresh my memory in regards to current tech so I can plan out upgrading my rig in next few months, the latest fad seems to be everyone going to SSD's recently.

Now it has been apparent that the market has gone down in prices for larger capacities which is the biggest reason why I didn't' bother jumping on soon, not to mention its still undergoing being proven its worth and reliability.

I've lost count of how many peeps are telling me to throw a SSD into my rig for the next build but what research I've done so far, I'm not real convinced its best for my needs, despite the advantages. Here's your chance to fill me on on my gaps of knowledge and dispute myths or rumors that are holding me back that aren't entirely true.

1. My biggest concern is reliability. It seems the life cycle of even Intel branded SSD's looks to still less then a magnetic hard drive over the long haul. As I tend to build my systems to last awhile, I don't like this prospect. As I'm no longer the hardcore PC gamer I used to be, I can't justify spending $200 every couple of years to replace an "aging" SSD were as good old Western digital drive will last until it croaks completely. I've been hearing more recently of allot of horror stories about these new Sandforce SSD's from a variety of companies. Everything from DOA's to having the SSD' crash entirely a few weeks after building the OS on it. Needless to say, that's not helping build my trust in SSD"s as I value and need my system builds to last.

Apparently there is slightly older SSD tech that has proven to be a bit more reliable vs these new Sandforce controllers? If so, what do I need to be keeping an eye out for to avoid having problematic SSD controllers and which brands?

2. I have gigs upon gigs of data on my Western Digital that grows weekly, mostly alot of photos and videos along with my video editing projects. Again from my research, im getting the sense that SSD's don't like rapidly and frequently used applications like this which result in reduced life span? If this is the case, SSD is utterly worthless to me, despite the speed gain.

3. It seems people are putting their OS and main program's on SSD themselves and then putting large data dumps/backups on magnetic storage drives. Is there a particular logic to this? Would it be applicable to me? My main use for this right and my future right will continue to be alot of email and web surfing, moderate video editing, crap loads of storage and light gaming. As such, I have no need or desire to spend the money on any type of RAID setup on my systems, I've only stuck with 1 main large HDD for both data and program storage over the years. This helps reduce HDD noise which drives me nuts and unnecessary components. I back up frequently to an external HDD for my crucial data

4. Anything in particular that I need to be aware of before venturing into SSD territory as a first time, light user or would I be better off with my particular needs to just stick with good old HDD for the foreseeable future until SSD's can grant me the same stability and reliability that magnetic drives do now.

I was in the same boat as you when I built my computer. Here's what I figured:

1) I think that my SSD will outlast the life of my computer. Yes, they might not have the life cycle of a traditional HDD, but it's not like it's going to wear out next year. I have faith that it will last much last much, much longer than my ability to resist replacing it for the next bigger and better thing. As with any piece of hardware, it could fail today, but that would be an abnormal occurrence rather than planned obsolescence or technological limitations.

2) I wouldn't use an SSD to store large volumes of data either. That's why I have a "storage" drive and external drives. I don't have the need to save or read huge files that fast.

3) Putting the OS on an SSD will put some real "snap" in your computer. When I'm working, I don't mind a few extra seconds when moving big files around or transferring other data, but I like the performance to be there. I like when I come into my office, I can hit the switch and my PC is ready to go before I have sat down to work. When I'm using photo software, everything loads up quickly. In this case, it's a matter of feeding my need for instant gratification. I point at a program, and "poof" it's running.

4) If you decide to go with an SSD, there are a thousand and one threads telling you what to do, when to do it, and why. It's actually much easier than folks make it sound. I think I only did about 5 things different, or in addition to what I would normally have done.

SSDs serve a different purpose than HDDs now. You could see why we're moving slowly from HDDs to SSDs since technology is progressing quickly. HDDs seem to serve only a few purposes with the main one being storage. SSDs are still young and full of bugs, but they'll take time to mature the manufacturing process and make them reliable.

Moving to a SSD was a great move since I don't have to swap out components unless it was defective. Now I'm trying to find another SSD soon for my laptop. SSDs are mostly about performance while HDDs are about storage capacity. You can see that HDD companies are consolidating and merging with only a few manufacturers left.

1) The new Sandforce controllers have a lot of issues. Crucial and Intel use non-Sandforce controllers and have essentially had no issues (minus a bug on one of Intel's newest line). Crucial's C300 and M4 and Intel's 510 are the drives I'd go after, personally. Few problems.

2) Use two drives. See 3 and 4.

3) SSDs make no noise at all. Sound would not be an issue as they have no moving parts. You won't need a RAID array at all.

4) Not much to be wary of. Just research drives you're interested in before you make a jump. I'd jump on the SSD bandwagon but they cost far more than I can afford, being a college student.

Freezebyte I am in the same boat, I just do not see the need for an SSD for me

I have 3 WD 250gb. drives in RAID 0 short stroked to 250gb. and I get a consistent
150mbs. performance out of them. I know SSDs are faster but my RAID is fast enough for me

Well, as much as I hate my HDD churning away at times and load times, I just dunno if I wanna jump on this particular boat yet....

Hell, I can't even decide if I should do i5 2500k or i7 2600k as I may not overclock at all this round.

It is definately not cut and dry when looking at your concerns. Time will tell on reliability. I got a C300 and am satisfied with the improvements. It is a rather large investment for the return considering what you can get for that same amount of money. Inresponse to item 3 in your OP, yes, that would be the ticket for you.

Getting an SSD is not about transfer rates its about access times. This is where most people get fooled. This is why my 1st gen SSD is still running strong and fast. No one would notice the difference from my SSD and the most recent in daily usage even though the transfer speeds have doubled. Why? Because there is a huge difference in access times from SSD and HDD but not from one SSD to another. This is why their great for OS drives where you are opening small files all the time.

Spending $50-$200 on a SSD will be the biggest performance difference you as the user of the computer will experience when you upgrade. Mine was $50 and is worth every penny. I just went through this a few months ago and I can assure you that this is the case, and after you have one you will wonder why you waited so long. Heck I just built my 73 year old dad a rig and HE has one. Computer stuff generally either dies immediately or ends up in the landfill due to obsolescence. The suggestions from Lost Hawaiian are all spot on, just put your OS on the SSD and keep/backup anything important in multiple locations- just like normal.
