Help me decide on an External HDD

Thread Starter
Hello !
I am going to move from my house because i need to attend my university this autumn, and i will be leaving my computer home. So i need an EXTERNAL HDD.
I will therefore take my laptop which has on it firewire and esata. It does not have usb 3.0 though.
I know esata is faster than firewire.
But an esata HDD is more expensive than a USB 3.0 HDD, and it has a smaller storage capacity.
I know my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 and if i will buy a 3.0 HDD it will work at 2.0 speeds, but then again i will be able to buy a HDD with a higher capacity than a HDD with esata.

Is it worth getting ESATA over USB ?
Is the extra speed worth the less capacity?

Thanks in advance !

Have you looked into buying the enclosure and drive separately, then assembling it yourself? I'm sure I've seen USB3/eSATA enclosures for around or under $30. Then you just add a $70 2TB drive and assemble.

What country are you in? (So that we know what stores to look at)

I will be moving to the UK so you can consider UK as my country.
You think you can find something like this there?
It seems kind fo a complicated thing to do, i have never done something like this !

Are you looking for something ultra-portable, like a WD Passport? Or do you want something that you can backup/download to in your room?

If you are looking for something as backup that doesn't have to go with you everywhere, I would recommend this:

You can put whatever drive you want in there. The version I linked to is either USB 2.0 or eSata. I just purchased 2 of the USB 3.0 versions of these along with 2 WD Caviar Black 1.5TB drives to put in them, to use as backups for my work and home computers.

I like knowing that I have a good, fast drive in there, and I think it's more durable than a WD My Book. Total cost to me for 3TB of storage was $220.

If you're looking for something smaller, I do also have several Passports of varying capacity and have never had a problem with them either.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

EDIT: I just saw your last post, and will say that the enclosures are very easy to put together. They come disassembled so all you do is slide your drive in, put in 4 screws to secure it, slide on the sides, 2 more screws, then put on the top, which takes 4 more screws...all provided. It has a built-in fan and power and HDD activity LEDs.

Buy a Seagate GoFlex Pro. I just bought one last week, it has several adapters you can add. This allows you to have a USB 3 or ESATA or FW drive. There are also several docks made for the GoFlex Drives. Also, even if you don't have a USB 3 laptop, the USB 3 drive will be faster than a USB 2 drive.

Thanks for the replies.
This idea with buying just a normal HDD and putting it into an adapter doesn't sound bad at all.

But i think i will need it's portability a little bit so i know that a normal HDD is no good for transportation, since the slightest shock can kill it;

But a HDD which is in the STATION category wont' be bad at all.

So you guys reckon i should go for a USB 3.0 which will work faster on a 2.0 USB than a 2.0 USB HDD would do? and thus i could get around 2TB capacity ?

Or with the same money, get only 1TB but have eSata ( and usb 2.0 on the same ) ?

Well, I guess the question you need to ask yourself is what's more important, speed or space?

If this is something that you're going to plug into at the end of the day and backup your notes, I would think you could just get it started, then do some surfing, go eat, take a shower, or whatever while it does its' thing. If you want to be able to transfer large amounts of data in between classes, then speed would be a priority.

I use mine for backup, so I usually start it running, then do something else while it works. I have a lot of images that I sometimes move around, so I wanted both speed and capacity which is why I went the route I did.

Since you're options are slightly more limited, you'll have to pick one or the other.

I will use it probably to store Blu-ray movies, game images, music, and my projects are projects done in autocad or excel which do not take more than 100 mb per project to back up.

If i will want to see a Blu-ray movie from the HDD directly on my laptop will the performance be affected by whether it's esata or USB ?

I might be mistaken, but I wouldn't think even USB 2.0 would be a problem. I know that the transfer speed is a whole lot higher than my wireless connection and I can stream 1080p videos.

EDIT: if you're in any way unsure about your ability to put one of these enclosures together, there's a video of this product you can watch. It's the version I have, but it's the same basic assembly.

Thread Starter
My bad, it really isn't difficult at all to be fair though.
But i am in for a little bit of portability as well so i guess i will try to get the normal external HDDS.

One last question. Should it be a passport, a mybook or a station?
Thanks in advance !
