Considering a HD 6950

Thread Starter
It's about that time for me to upgrade some parts and for my video card I am looking to replace my trusty 8800gt w/ a hd 6950.

main concern is: will I be losing much performance out of the 6950 if i am using a q6600?

I do not want to have to up my cpu just to up my vid card so i need to figure what I can expect if I do stick with this cpu when i buy the card

specs:
windows 7 x64
6gb ram
8800gt
q6600
750i

if it turns out that ill be at a bottleneck using the q6600 in conjunction with the 6950, what cpu brand would you recommend me up'ing to? ofc ill have to get a new motherboard but since i am pretty frequent gamer i'm assuming amd is the way to go?

You'll be fine, however you'll want a new cpu if you CF 2 6950s.

glad to hear, not looking to cf 6950 anytime soon. is it overkill to run with a 2gb card or is it necessary for some of the more modern games?

If your just running a single 1080 display you should be fine with most games.

You gonna look for a older model to flash into a 6970?

is there a certain brand that i need to purchase in order to be able to unlock it to a 6970? i ask because i know a couple HIS cards weren't reference models and therefore unable to be unlocked
post #8 of 11
You need to find a old stock 2gb 6950 with a amd pcb
post #9 of 11
any brand will work as long as its a reference model

Yeah, I thought that's what we were talking about. I forgot 6950s also come in 1gb flavor, didn't even think OP was considering that.

OP, definitely go for the 2gb version.
