Phenom X4 9650 Bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Just wondering if this CPU will bottleneck the new XFX AMD Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition GPU i will be getting over the weekend? Can't really afford to upgrade both right now but seeing as my current GPU has just broken (GT9600) im going for the GPU first.

I know these are the first Phenoms and that the Phenom II's would be better so i'll pick one up soon. Just wondering if and how much it will bottleneck that GPU?

Only using a 17" Screen right now so max res is 1280x1024. I sometimes use my 42" HDTV so how will it perform on each of these?

Thanks for any answers

I believe the first gen phenoms bottle neck a lot of newer cards. Only way to find out though is play a game and monitor usage.

No problem i guess it doesn't make much of a difference as the card is going to out perform the current GT430 i had to put in while i wait for the 6870 to arrive lol. Can't play anything worth while on it -.-

I guess after the card upgrade i need to get a new CPU/Mobo and some decent memory. This build wasn't even a year old and ive had to replace memory, PSU and now GPU through break downs...

Yea that cpu will certainly bottleneck alot because the 6870 is a decent card that can max out almost any games at 1080p. But don't worry, most games you won't even notice much except for cpu intensive games like gta 4, bfbc2, maybe starcraft 2.

There will be a bottleneck, but don't worry too much about it. The 6870 is at a killer price and the GT 430 definitely would not be enough to push demanding games or anti aliasing even at 1280x1024.

There will be a huge bottleneck, especially at that resolution. For a low resolution as you have stated there will be even more load put on your terrible CPU than at a higher resolution.

My friend had a x4 9550 and a GTX 580 at 1440x900.... There was a bottleneck, but he could max out BFBC2 with 40+ FPS, but he just got a 965 BE now though.

You should be fine.

Your friend can afford a GTX 580 but "upgraded" to a 965? WOW....

Mainly going to be playing RIFT, BFBC2, Crysis etc. RIFT more than anything and before my GT9600 broke i had it running on high without any problems.

CPU will get an upgrade just not yet

It'll be ok in terms of the average framerate but it'll slw to a crawl when the action hots up.

You end up in single digits in a few games.
