Would an overclock on the CPU help at all? Its standard and never really overclocked CPU before just stuck to doing the GPU.

I might be able to uprgrade the CPU just as my 6870 arrives i'll need to check

You're board actually supports the Phenom 2 and Athlon 2 CPU's with a simple BIOS update.

Personally I would sell your current Phenom and look at getting an Athlon 2 x4 or if you can find one, A cheap Phenom 2 x4

My mates Phenom X3 8450 at 2.418ghz bottlenecks a 5750, so I hate to think when you put the X4 with a 6870..

Yeah the board can support the AM3 sockets but i cant use DDR3 so i think in order of an upgrade it will be the 6870 then a new CPU and then a board with some new memory.

As for the BIOS update i think i flashed F11 the other week so i'm on the latest without touching the beta. Another quick question about my PSU its nothing fancy was just something cheap i could find at the time.

Its 600W and puts out combined 378W over both the 12V Rails
25A on the +12V1 and 22A on the +12V2 is this going to be enough for the current system + 6870?

I'd be looking at a PSU upgrade first before anything. That sounds like a VERY dangerous unit to claim 600w, but only have 378w peak on the 12v rails.

Your system will pull no more than 300-400w ever with that card in there. But I wouldn't trust a PSU like yours with it. Look into a good 400w unit. Corsair CX430, Rosewill Green 430, Antec Neo ECO 400, Antec Earthwatts Green EA430D.....all will suite your needs very nicely, and are under $50 (all are usually on sale at some point around $30).

And yes, I agree. Get the PSU first, CPU next, board next (990FX perhaps for Bulldozer?), and then later on, jump into Bulldozer and Crossfire. Although if you jump into Crossfire, you'll probably want a good 600-650w PSU.....but we can cross that bridge later.

Great advice thanks everyone who answered +rep and i'll check those PSU's out now thanks pioneer

Just seen this i'd prefer Modular and isn't out of range so is this as good as the ones you mentioned?
http://www.ebuyer.com/152009-ocz-500...ata-ocz500mxsp

There are Corsair CX430's for about £35 but no Modular which would be better the OCZ or the Corsair

The ModXStreams are good; should be better (more powerful) than the CX430.

agreed! have built many systems with this 500w and they all hold up very well, plus it's super cheap after rebate for a modular
