That's pretty fast, but I bet that plane can't turn laps at Martinsville.

Na that sucker landed right in the middle of the sea, right where they wanted it to, it was probably 9 min to impact at those speeds....

Not something that they can test at those actual speeds in a wind tunnel. The highest velocity currently attainable in a wind tunnel is mach 15 (roughly 11418 m.p.h. at sea level w/ normal atmospheric pressure -14.7 psi.)

Imo, they should press on. Many, many aircraft were lost while even accidentally bumping up against the sound barrier. I think controlled atmospheric hypersonic flight is going to encounter just as many problems initially.

Why would they possibly outfit this drone with a nuke..
It adds unnecessary complexity and weight to a prototype.
Not to mention that during the Cold War the Russians and U.S. already had such plans and put a few test designs up there.

Likely, from an uneducated point of view, the drone hit a rough pocket of air, a sudden pressure change, or etc. At that speed, anything that manages to shift the drone even a fraction of a single degree would cause it to immediately disintegrate.

Interestingly, losing the drone means very little from a PGS perspective. Assuming we can mate the drone to a smaller launch vehicle, we could put it on a Destroyer or Cruiser. The important thing is that the drone maintains that speed and accuracy on descent, the ability to traverse vast distances very quickly just makes the WEAPON much more convenient to use, but no less devastating.

And before anyone brings up any negative aspects of this weapon:

i. They're not nukes.
ii. Pushes the boundaries of science.
iii. May be the next evolution in global warfare for other nations to follow suit. No more need for everyone to rush for nukes. Much like the evolution of drones changed manned warfare.

Either of those should make anyone jump for joy, and this coming from a pro-nuke fella'.

Oh really, what's this Mach 30 wind tunnel I read about?

Sure why not? I'm pretty sure 3x10^8 m/s is a lot faster than 3800 m/s.

It was "lost" over the Pacific Ocean so I'm pretty sure anyone's house was out of harm's way On top of that, it probably disintegrated in the Earth's atmosphere during reentry, so no chance of hurting anyone or anything.

Exactly... It went through many layers of atmospheric pressure.

Ever wonder why space shuttles don't just "plunge" to earth head on? Even coming into earth's atmosphere in a trajectory there are still sequential maneuvers that they most go through because of the extreme resistance. It's why most asteroids are destroyed on entry and is likely the case here...

I doubt we'll ever find fragments of this shuttle given it's size and speed that it was traveling.

I wonder what caused this issue. Since we have never been able to create something that can go Mach 20 for a decent distance, it just tells you that this is the most difficult rocket science anyone will do.
