Looking to game on multiple monitors, need advice (23")

Hello again OCN!

I'm currently looking into gaming on the multi monitors and was wondering what would be the first step in doing so? I have no idea about resolutions or eyefinity or any of that and I'm open to either a 3 monitor or dual monitor setup but preferably a dual monitor would be nice.

I currently have a HP 23" and my graphics card is a xfx 6950 if that helps.

Gladly apreciated team!

dual monitor - nothing really special needed. your 6950 will handle duals no problem. You'll need to play with CCC once your 2nd monitor is plugged in to get Windows to see it and set it up.

For Eyefinity, at least one of your monitors will need to be on an active DP (display port) connection. At least on the 5xxx series it was this way - someone correct me if 6xxx series is different.

Then you can use CCC to configure a 3x1 set up and off you go.

Everyone has a favorite monitor, so take recommendations with a grain of salt. THe best looking one for me may look like crap to you. Ideally get 2-3 monitors that are the same brand and model so the screens and bezels line up evenly.

Also to note, not all games support dual or triple monitors. More and more are now, but not all of them. Even those that do often have some issues sometimes. If you play games like MMOs then most modern ones support multiscreens.

EDIT: ANother note - when you are running multiscreens, framerate often drops. If you are used to seeing 60 FPS, expect it to drop in half-ish across 3 monitors on a single GPU card.

wow thanks alot bear that was some great help advice. So as of right now should i just grab another HP 23" since I already have one ? I'll probably only run a dual since I don't want my FPS to drop too hard. When running dual are my resolutions something like 1920x1080 times 2 ? or is it like tripple monitors where its 5xxx by 1xxxx

One thing to remember about gaming across only 2 screens is that the center of the screen will be under or split by the bezel. Also I would recommend picking up either the same monitor you have now, getting all new monitors, or making sure any new monitors you buy will look correct/line up correctly with the old monitor. About resolutions, if you ran two monitors instead of three technically its just one giant monitor so your resolution with two 1920x1080 monitors would be 3840x1080 without bezel compensation.

Gaming on dual monitors sucks. In FPS games, your crosshair is split by the bezel, and it's difficult and unimmersive to play. in the end, not worth it.

Triple monitors are fine, but hard to run though.

If you only get dual monitors, you can just game on one and use the two when browsing and such.

I havent run duals in awhile, so good point Red Man. I remember having that problem, and I ended up running games on one screen and having maps, internet, streaming media, etc up on the other monitor - not really 2 screen gaming.

That was what pushed me into jumping up to three monitors, and I'm very glad I did. In games that it works - it makes a world of difference. MMO's, Civ5, several FPS to mention a few. It is an investment though to buy 3 monitors - usually all in one shot. Worth every cent IMO

Two monitors for FPS games and things similar isn't good. Your crosshair gets split by the bezel on the monitor. Triple is much better for this type of stuff.
Dual would be good if you used one for gaming and one for other stuff.

Although do remember that with the awesomeness of Eyefinity comes a fair amount of troubleshooting every once in awhile, but newer games are getting better about supporting Eyefinity.
