New Build -- Need Guidance

Thread Starter
I am currently in the market for a new high-performance build. I have a max budget of $2000 and do have a case size constraint of 21.5x9x20.5 (LxWxH). I am eyeing THIS mid-tower due to it's size and decent reviews, however I am concerned of it's airflow capabilities that of which I have read are mediocre. Are there ways to alleviate those issues with that particular case, and could you recommend better case options?

Instead of linking the individual parts I've taken a screenshot of the items in my NewEgg shopping cart... saves time. CLICK ME FOR BUILD. I am aware that I'm missing a HSF; I need guidance in choosing one that will perform well and fit into a case that fits my needs.

Please do criticize the build and make suggestions, as this will be the first computer I'm building for myself. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Your build looks like it's off to a good start, but I do have some suggestions:

You could go with a Corsair HX650 PSU and save yourself ~$80. 650W is more than enough for the parts in your cart and will give you headroom in the future. If you want more power, Newegg has a promo going on the Corsair TX750 and HX750 right now which are also a good buy.

In regards to MoBo, is there any particular reason you're going with the Sabertooth over the P8P67 Pro Rev.3? You said you're concerned about air flow/cooling and I've read of people having issues with heat actually getting trapped in the Sabertooth's plastic housing. Pro will save you $30, and is a tried and trusted b oard.

Also, for the graphics card, you could get a 6970 or GTX580 for pretty much the same price, but in the end it's up to you. 570 is a great card, but I would spent the extra $30-50 and jump up to a 580.

Finally, a lot of people here (including me) will recommend the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB over the W.D. Black. It's slightly faster and $50 on Amazon right now.

I can't comment on the case, but I'm sure someone else will chime in!

Oh, and if you live near a Fry's, they have 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 CAS9 on sale for $25 after MIR!

Edit: also, didn't see a CPU in your cart but I assume you're going with a 2500k. If you live near a Microcenter, they usually have the 2500k for $179.99 and you get an additional $40 off if you bundle it with a motherboard when you buy it!

Foolish me- I meant to put the 2500k in my cart, gah.

Unfortunately I don't live by a Microcenter anymore, wish I did. They always have great prices. I don't live by a Fry's electronics either. Oh well, looks like I'm stuck with NewEgg.

As for the 580 I agree with you. Would the HX750 suffice if I were to add a second 580 in the future? I plan on doing a pretty heavy OC too. Just wanted to be safe with the extra headroom 850w gives. I just want your opinion on this matter.

Yup, HX750 will be just fine It's a quality PSU and 750W is enough power!

Edit: looks like Newegg or Amazon doesn't have any GTX580 on sale, so the price difference is going to be more along the ~$70-100 lines. May want to stick with the 570 then. If you're not in a hurry then there may be a sale on a 580 this weekend.

I am in no real rush but I have to have this done within the next 2 weeks since my old rig has died.

As far as the case issue that's the only real wildcard here. I'll see if I can scrap up similar builds on Amazon and TigerDirect.

For the motherboard I refuse to go with the P8P67 Pro. A friend of mine had... a few, all due to RMA. Each time it was a different issue. Of of them even smelled like it was burning. I don't know if the same issues plague the Deluxe.

Would a mobo based on z68 be worthwhile?

Z68 has no teething issues then P67 boards so in that respect they will be more stable but I have heard good things about the Pro from people on here.
If you want to avoid the P67 then go for the Z68 V Pro.

Right but do I need the Z68? What is the prime difference between the two and what do I gain or lose by having one over the other? I hear P67 is more stable I'd just avoid the P8P67 Pro board, I'm fine with the actual chipset... just not that board. Any board that basically caught on fire is a board I avoid.

The Z68 won't really do anything for your build. It provides accessibility to integrated graphics (which you won't need with your card), SSD caching (might help a little with loading speed, but SSD's are already fast), and quicksync video transcoding (won't help you). The P8P67 Pro Rev. 3.0 is one of the most highly recommend boards on these forums - did your friend have one of the older boards?

It's possible that he had an older one as it was quite a while ago and I don't remember which revision it was. I'm open to it. I also hear the ASRock is good. Any words on that?
