If you're not afraid of multi GPU setups, maybe 2x 6950?

i5 2500k $220

asrock p67 extreme4 $150 or the BIOSTAR TP67XE $125 (openbox Biostar available for $85)

Ripjaw X 8GB RAM $60

TOTAL (cheapest possible, Open Box Biostar) - $365

That leaves $135 to spend on cooler (212+ recommendation) case and PSU and a HDD if his runnging the 560 then I would say this PSU would do fine: Corsair CX430V2 for $35 MIR

He is looking for a build without a graphics card for around $500, not some graphics cards for around $500.

for a single card i would have to recommend the gtx 580 though. in time you could always SLI that.
