New NIC needed?

Thread Starter
Ok, so my onboard NIC RTL8111E (Crappy, not installed properly/Deep sleep issue) so it seems has been fried in thunderstorm while the comp was off. No amount of searching has lead to a working solution so I guess I have to buy a card.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get one and such? Brand etc. Didnt think I'd need one, but now I do.

Yeah, been looking into linksys. Just not too sure where to get the card. The main site isnt exactly a "Look here, NIC for sale" or maybe im looking in the wrong place.

Edit: Looked at Newegg. The one linksys card seems to have no driver support( I think I know about poor linksys support)

And Dlink didnt support Win 7. Lolwhat?

Do you need a PCI or PCI-E x1 card? If the former, check out Intel's PCI NICs, if the latter, get the Intel Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter.

mrwalker, PCI Express x1.
If anything ill just go to best buy or some place like walmart or w/e and buy one. Any NIC should be fine as long as its fast, supported and not made of crap.

if lightning took out the nic, odds are it took out more than just the nic

might need a new board, see if its under warranty

could also be router/switch/cable problem
see what you can do to narrow down the issue, different pc, ports, cable ect..

Everything is working fine enough, only the NIC isnt being detected at all. Wont show up in Device manager or Network and settings via connection icon in the tray.

Router is working fine, all other computers are connecting to the internet fine. Cables still work, plugged the cable from the desktop into different laptops, all connect through LAN.

I'm seeing nothing wrong but the NIC. The board doesnt look damaged, my only guess was to get a new NIC, if anything.

Side note : Office depot does not support windows 7 Network adapters (In-store for the most part), interesting.

Hm, looks nice but isnt there a good one that could be hard wired? Its not a problem but there is less of a chance for a wired ethernet adapter to not pick up a connection than a wireless card.

Unless its garuanteed to not drop signals at the drop of a dime. Its getting towards rainy season and wireless may not be the best route to go atm.
