LHC@home 2.0 -Finding the Higgs Boson.

Thread Starter
Hey,

Today I read that the scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are asking the public to fold for them in pursuit of the Higson Bogues. (The theorized particle that glues quantum matter together. Basically the missing piece that balances all their equations together.) If you don't know, the LHC is a high particle accelerator in Europe where they smash tiny particles together to see their subatomic structure. They gain controversy from time to time when it's worried they'll blow up the world. eek.gif (Or more accurately create black holes that will swallow us all.)

Here's the article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14488797

..and link to their homepage: http://lhcathome.web.cern.ch/LHCathome/Physics/

Apparently it's based on a project from 2004 where people folded to "simulate protons beam dynamics in the LHC". (A way better use of resources than looking for aliens ninja.gif.)

Anyone down to do some folding for this? Or let me know if you're already on it.

Regards,

GG

Very cool ... as much as I want to find out the meaning of life element... I only have one rig atm and I'm sticking to folding for the cause. If I build another I may help here too.

Since this is a BOINC project, I'll move it over to that forum.

i have been doen it for a time now and have had no problems so far but i did find some thing on this on the web site that mite help out
i have all ways wanted to help out with this project

Quote:
For best performance of T4T, we recommend you change your BOINC client preferences using your BOINC Manager as follows:

1. Under the Preferences Tab "processor usage", in the line "While processor usage is less than X percent (0 means no restriction)", set the box X to 0 (zero). The BOINC default for X is 25% which causes frequent pausing/resuming of the VirtualBox process.

2. Under "Use at most X % CPU time", set the box X to 100 %. The BOINC default is 60% which can also cause pausing/resuming as above.
hope this helps some people

That virtual box is a mess to use on my main system. My others can run Win7 or Linux and their application won't run on Linux. When they come out with a Linux app without the VM, I would run it like I run Optima... but it was super clunky on my system if I ran any other tasks and didn't shutdown properly.

Oh, and it KILLED my GPU's... couldn't keep them fed on the i7-950 or the 1090t system so the GPU usage trace started bouncing off 0%!! LOL!

Okay, I tried setting up the VM and stuff per their message board tips and it worked. Been running one task now 8 hrs and it's 33% done (it says...). Got all the tweaks and CPU things fixed right this time. Perhaps I did something major wrong the first try...

Soo, looks like it's okay now, uses 1 virtual core, doesn't disturb the GPU tasks anymore or slow down my system.

Can you make it use, say 7 threads?? If so, I might give this a try. I find this very interesting.

For the large initial DL, I will just take my rig over to my sister's house. No way I could DL it with my shameful usage cap.

It's still running fine. I have no idea how to make it use more than 1 thread... maybe need multiple VM's or just load more than one task?

Anyway, 17Hrs24Min and it's 72% done.
