Gentle Typhoon Questions

Thread Starter
One of my fans on my Antec Twelvehundred finally died and I was thinking about replacing all 5 of the 120mm fans with the fastest Scythe GT out there.

There is no difference in price from 3000 RPM to 5400 RPM so I figured I would just get the fastest one because it could be useful if my computer started getting toasty.

However I'm just wondering what connections these have? I read that it has a 4 pin connector, however in pictures I've seen it looks like it has a 4 pin connector as well as a molex connector.

My other question is how would you configure these fans? I want to have control over the fan speeds and I'd prefer to have it set through my BIOS. I have 2 3 pin sysfans on my mobo.

Thanks!

They're powerfull fans, not designed for motherboards. To run five of them and have speed control you'll need a fan controller, and a decent one, prolly one of the Lamptrons or Rheobus's are the few that will have enough power if you want more than 1 fan on a channel.

They have a molex only because of the high current draw, at just over 1 amp they exceed some motherboard headers. You'll need a molex to 3-pin to plug them into a fan controller.

I have the 3000rpm model with a 3-pin connector. You can get them either way. I use a Scythe Master Pro fan controller.

They're great fans, but one thing you might want to consider is the noise level. The 3000 is definitely the loudest sound coming from my case when it's cranked up, and the 5400rpm is rated 35% louder. The 1850's are considered to be among the best fans available, and are supposed to be pretty quiet, which is why they're hard to find, I suppose. Their bigger brothers are another story.

I can't imagine 5 running flat out. Maybe if you keep your PC in another room...

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

Thanks both of you! I'm going to have to think about this a little more now because at $23 a pop, on top of getting a molex to 3 pin adapter for each one I'll be spending quite a bit of money.

As far as sound goes, I have a Delta fan on my heatsink that pushes 150CFM when it's at 100% so I know what to expect in terms of noise if they are running flat out. I just want to have that extra speed just to have it, especially since there is no difference in price for the 3000RPM to 5400RPM.

I'll have to price everything, but if I do go through with this I will be sure to record a nice video with all of my fans running at 100%, I'll probably get a noise complaint but it will be worth it

I have 3 AP-29's (3000rpm) running off my mobo with no issues. I also keep them at 100%, they really aren't that loud, somewhere around 36db.

It works really well when my ambient temps aren't high. Right now it's been higher than normal because of my dead fan and the hot summer.

However whenever my CPU is at load it hasn't gotten over 55c recently. The most it's been at was 70c and that was OC'd to 4Ghz and my case fans don't really suck in much air.

My heatsink is this guy: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/88...tl=g48c373s960

The AP-29 to -31 get their 12v power from Molex - directly from the PSU. Best to leave them that way.

You can do a PWM mod (see my sig) that will allow them to be controlled by your mb. Either wire them directly to a 4-wire PWM plug or wire them to PWM plugs and plug them into an
(available here). That way your mb can control all of them.
