Help me fix my setup please

Thread Starter
I just got two 2TB Samsungs to put in RAID alongside my 1TB boot drive. My motherboard manual says to change the SATA mode from AHCI to RAID. I did that and then tried to boot into Windows, and it crashed during load screen and went to error recovery. I tried that and it did not help. I reverted back to AHCI and it booted fine. Previously while I was in RAID mode, I went ahead and created the RAID volume that I wanted. Now back in AHCI mode, when I go to computer/manage/storage, I only see one blank volume entitled Disk 0 (as well as my boot drive of course). This suggests that the other disk was merged into it, but I'm not really sure. Is my disk actually in RAID? If not, how do I set up RAID without losing my boot drive?

If they actually are set up in RAID 0, wouldn't it show a capacity of 4TB? If so, I would say they're ready.

Just my 2c worth...

They're actually set up in RAID 1. No luck on that route .

If your using your 1 TB boot drive and want to use the 2 Samsungs in RAID, you need to keep the setting as AHCI, not RAID. With RAID, its trying to boot off the Samsung RAID drives, not your 1TB drive. You have to create the RAID array also sometimes prior to use, then once in Windows, it should see the RAID array. You will need the Intel Storage Matrix drivers loaded if it sees the RAID drives in Windows, but says you need to format them when trying to access them. This is IF you using the Intel chipset for the array and have them connected to the correct SATA ports.

Well, assuming you had set up the array prior to installing your OS, there's 2 ways I can think of to check RAID 1 setup.

1) If both drives are plugged in, you would only see one listed in disk management. If you see 2, you know your array failed...or one of your drives is bad.

2) The better way to check would be to go into disk management, select the "drive 0" you indicated was there, then right click and check the properties. It should tell you whether it's a single drive or RAID array and what type it is.

Hope this helps,

Rich

EDIT: guess you could just skip step 1...

the AHCI is usually the sata port that is not grouped with the others on the mobo. Usually on the board facing at you, rather than off the side of the mobo.

Hmm...that looks like a single drive to me.

This is not my strong area, but to me it looks like your array is not set up. I can't think of anything else to do but maybe try taking out one drive, then the other and see if anything changes in Disk Management. If one of the drives is bad, it won't show up, and if the array is working, you would get a message that the array has been broken...I think...

Note: I'm just stalling for time until a real expert shows up...

Are the drives on the grey or red SATA ports. Red are Marvell, grey is Intel. Load the Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers if you're using the grey SATA ports and then open the Intel program. It should show the RAID array and what type it is, IF its set up correctly. I'll post pics of my setup shortly.

EDIT:Looking at your HDDs, they appear to be setup as RAID 0, but not actively setup yet. You can create the array in Windows from the Intel Matrix storage software under the status button.

The answer seems simple enough - he should go back into RAID mode and create a new RAID-0 array, then flip to AHCI and boot Windows. Then he can check Disk Management and have his answer.

If it shows 4TB, he flips back to RAID mode and re-creates the RAID-1 array.

One other slower option is to fire up a bootable linux CD (System Rescue CD?) and check if there's data on both drives. (Not as easy as recreating the RAID arrays, though)
