Fixing up old subwoofer? - Page 3

I do understand how huge the box is, and I'll definitely be willing to cut it down a bit, but lengthwise, it fits perfectly in the cubby underneath my TV, and finding another spot that a subwoofer could fit might be a bit of a challenge.

And I'm running this off of a HTPC, so the computer is doing the 'crossing-over.'
You might find better positions for a sub by moving it.

And I wouldn't trust a HTPC to act as a crossover personally. Wait to use the proper sub until you get a proper sub amplifier. The Bash / Dayton 500w plate amps aren't too terribly expensive (can be found at PE).

Oh I definitely understand moving it can help, but instead of a WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor), it's more of a MAF (Mom Acceptance Factor).

I've always wanted a plate amp, but if I go with one, I'll have a lot less money to spend on the subwoofer itself. $250 is the absolute max I can spend for quite awhile.

Might want to go with a prebuilt for now then honestly. You'll have a hard time beating a pre built sub for $250 with the driver AND amp.

As a total DIY'er, I don't know if I could bring myself to do that...
It doesn't even need to be audiophile quality, though. I just want something to bring a little rumble to movie nights and such.

But if you think waiting awhile would be best, I could definitely do that.

Well, you're looking at one of these amps as a minimum.....

Bash 500w - $189
Dayton 500w - $325
Dayton 1000w rack amp - $399

Even going with the bare cheapest option there, you're looking at $190 for the amp alone. That leaves you $60 to buy a driver, and that's just not enough to get a good quality driver.

I stumbled upon the stuff you're selling in the classifieds, pioneerisloud. How would something like that receiver do for a subwoofer amp?

And if I don't do the subwoofer build, I think I'm just going to upgrade what I call my car's Garage Sale Sound System. I just have the urge to drop some cash on a project, I need something to keep my busy until schoo.

Lol, I'm actually using that receiver right now, with 4ohm per channel driving a DVC sub. It metered out at 500w RMS.

As such, I'm not entirely sure I want to sell the receiver anymore. I just lost the stupid thread to remove the receiver from it, lol.

The problem is though, most receivers only give power at 8ohms. With a subwoofer you'll be looking at a 4ohm or less load (some are even 1 ohm or 1/2ohm). Plus the crossover options are missing.....

If I was really going to do it, I could always buy two subwoofers and wire them up together for an 8 ohm load, right?

Ok, I just found myself with about $50 more. If I could sell my old GTX 260 core216 for $60-$70, I would almost have $400 of extra cash.
