4GB of RAM: Not enough anymore? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Wow, I added up the numbers and only 342.5MB is being used! Yet even CPU-Z states that I have 4GB. Task Manager is showing about 3.8GB being used, though! ***

Ima re-seat the RAM and hope it fixes the problem. If not, virus scan time, yet again... :/

use process explorer and home in on the svc service. It will give you the dll using the ram. But that pic looks normal. System idle tasks cpu usage are always high
post #13 of 26
Thread Starter
Yeah it's the Desktop Window Manager that's using all that RAM on the SVC service. No big deal since I disable Aero when doing resource-intensive work anyway.

Anyway, I reseated my RAM, and dropped the clock from 912 to 760MHz, as well as dropping volts from 1.9 to 1.8v. I left the timings at 5-5-5-15 though because it's running about 40MHz too slow now but I can't do anything about that, so I figure the more aggressive timings will offset any possible overvoltage (RAM's rated at 800MHz 5-5-5-18 @ 1.8v). The numbers are still about 500MB off but it's a lot better than before; usage is now hovering at about 32% with nothing running, which is what it's normally at.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll keep you posted if anything goes awry again.

GAH! Just like that the problem is back. Hopefully it's just a virus. I can't afford new RAM/MoBo right now.

I multi task a lot, 4gb is just not enough for me anymore. When I upgraded to 8gb of ram about a month or 2 ago I would frequently be hitting 95% to 100% ram usage.

My new system will have no less than 8gb of ram.
Something is wrong. My laptop only has 4GB of ram with 90 processes and it only uses about 20 percent of ram.

Could you post a picture of your resource monitor memory section?

Well I can't now because the usage just dropped back down to normal levels again. Two different AV scans (Panda & Housecall, doing a Malwarebytes scan soon) produced nothing but a couple tracking cookies. I'll do a full scan soon just to make sure I'm clean.

AAANNND they just jumped back up again, but not nearly as bad as before:

Instead of doing all those scans, it will be easier just to format and reinstall OS.
You have 3 harddrives so just backup the important files and do a format

Nah, **** that. I think I'm actually getting close to solving this. I installed CacheSet, and discovered that not only does my file cache start immediately growing from boot into a ridiculous size, it's working set maximum is at a ridiculous 1,073,741,824 KB! This leads me to believe that both µTorrent and the fact that I've installed tons of new games lately is causing the issue. I'm gonna tone it back to a more reasonable number and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

Edit: Looks like I finally tackled the problem: simply clearing the cache with this app immediately freed up a large percentage of my RAM. The problem is now, it starts growing in size again and won't stop, despite the fact that I limited it to 500MB! So now that I know why my available RAM is disappearing, how do I prevent my file cache from growing out of control?
