Age Old Question: Get Intel or wait for Bulldozer...

Thread Starter
So I am currently making a heavy gaming+recording w/ FRAPS budget computer, with some video editing on the side. I already have an Intel 2500k set up and I love it, but not sure I have the money for all the components for a new one.... But I will later. So, let me show you what I can get with my budget ($620)

AMD Build
  • Phenom II x4 955
  • G SKILL DDR3 8GB, 1600
  • 650W PSU
  • 1TB HDD (7200RPM, Spinpoint F3)
  • Radeon HD 5770
  • AM3+ Motherboard
  • Roughly $590 total
  • Eventually to CrossFire the 5770, upgrade to Bulldozer

Intel Build
  • i5 2500k
  • G SKILL DDR3 4GB, 1600
  • 650W PSU
  • 1TB HDD (7200RPM, Spinpoint F3)
  • P67 Motherboard (ASUS)
  • Roughly $560 total
  • Eventually to buy GTX 460, be good as gold

So, I'd like to hear your responses.

Wait for Bulldozer for the AMD build and hope it rocks Intel?
Or
Build the Intel, play something like Minecraft, and wait for a video card?

I would wait and build up your budget truthfully. Get it up to like $1000 and get a killer rig that will last you until 2013-2014.

Yep. I'm giving it to my little brother for his 14th birthday.

Not the monitor or case, however.

From my experience, the Intel suffers less when recording (when I had my Xeon X3440), however actual performance wise was negligible in game.

I cannot OC my processor, otherwise I'd see how much of a hit my CPU takes at 4ghz.

I'd lean towards Intel on this one since you wanna do video. If you weren't, then I'd say AMD.

inb4 "OMG THE i5 IS SO MUCH BETTAHHHH!!!"

Look at game benchmarks at max settings. The performance difference is negligible in most games. And I can tell you that BF3/SW TOR runs just fine on a 955BE if you were to get either of those.

Within $600 you can build the AMD PC with the 8GB RAM but with a GTX 460 already in it, I know it's possible from recommending so many PCs

The only REAL video editing is just taking the FRAPS files I record and making them smaller, and maybe editing some home movies, but that's about it.

Also, the games I plan on playing are
  • Minecraft
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfail 3
  • Red Orchestra 2
  • Battlefield 3
  • Killingfloor / L4D / L4D2
  • Portal / Portal 2
and some other less demanding games off of Steam.

I wouldn't spend a ton of money on your build then. Find a nice used 955 BE C3 and a decent motherboard.

I found my 965 @ 4.2GHz could not handle fraps with League of Legends.

When I attempted to fraps BFBC2 on my 1090T @ 4.4GHz it went better, but I was unable to maintain a high rate of fps. I would get lags as well, which were pretty lame/deadly to me.

My i5-2500k can fraps every game I've tried so far without issue. Including Crysis 2, BFBC2, LoL, Metro 2033, Dragon Age 2, Dirt 3, F1 2010, and many more while maintaining a high level of frames.
