Canabalized Rosewill for Filco Switch Swap

Thread Starter
I originally bought the Rosewill to try out blue switches. I liked them, but hated the numpad so I didn't use it much and I eventually fell back on my trusty Filco tenkeyless brown. When EK started stocking Leopolds I ended up getting another brown tenkeyless for backup and actually preferred the Leopold to my Filco as my daily driver. Rather than seeing my Filco sit unused, I decided to swap the blue switches from the Rosewill into the Filco.

Here's the Rosewill's PCB + plate removed from the outer casing. Notice the time of day when I started this mod...

Rosewill's plate removed from PCB. Notice the sun is no longer out... PITA unsoldering all of those switches.

Donor blue switches.

Filco removed from its outer casing.

Browns removed from the Filco plate.

Filco replaced with blues and resoldered.

Finished.

I have already ordered a blank black set of WASDKeyboards keycaps that I plan on using for this keyboard, my Filco blanks have gone shiny.

Every time I hear about the RK9000, I want one more.

Especially since I heard there were going to be MX Brown versions....

IIRC, the Rosewill has "FILCO" stamped onto its controller logic - exact same keyboard as the NKRO Filco, except $40 cheaper.

Yep, it's a Filco board for the most part. I'm so tempted to just sign up for auto-notify on Newegg right now and jump on a Rosewill RK-9000 with Blues to replace the Razer Blackwidow in my office.

Once I finish swapping the keys back into the Rosewill, it'll technically be a MX Brown Rosewill with a MX Blue numpad.

Yes, the controller is stamped "Filco" but I'm not sure if it's 100% like a Filco full keyboard. It has through hole diodes as opposed to surface mount like my tenkeyless. I'm not sure if this is the case with their regular full keyboards. Build quality was certainly similar to my tenkyless, even used the same screws to keep the casing together.

Removed the original Rosewill key caps for the first time since the switch. Blues look nice.

Filco and WASD row 4 blanks side by side. They're identical in profile and thickness. I forgot to take a picture, but the Leopold caps are thicker and is probably why I preferred it to the Filco. The WASD caps have a bit of texture to them compared to the coated Filcos, but not as much as Leopolds.

Tried to capture the difference between a Filco and WASD red escape key, picture was taken straight from my camera unedited. The WASD is more of an orange red. For comparison, the wire above the WASD blank is orange.

Final shot of my refreshed Filco.

I like the WASD key caps, but I have no idea how long they'll last before getting shiny. For $37 shipped (87 key set), I think they're a nice option in the US for those who prefer to have completely blank non engraved keys, albeit made of ABS.

Or for $50, you can customize a 104 key, color the numpad, and ask WASD to send you a numpad 5 without the raised dot. Then you have a blank set and a replacement color set for the arrow keys, wasd, and two Esc or 1-0 row keys I also added 2 blue keys, but it's not necessary. Sure is nice to have options though.

This is also a good option, but I wasn't looking for optional colored keys for my wasd and arrow keys.

One last mod: I ordered o-rings from mcmaster for some of my keyboards. They're the same o-rings being offered at WASDkeyboards but they're a bit cheaper from mcmaster if ordering more than 1 set. The o-rings are a nice addition and greatly reduce clack noise associated with bottoming out. My typing speed reduces when I'm concentrating on not bottoming out, but with the o-rings it's nice to not have to worry about it anymore. I would definitely recommend them.

Why do you own so many mechanical keyboards?
