Do mechanical keyboards last a long time? - Page 2

Well, it's mechanical. Not some cheap rubber. Of course it'll last a while. Interested in seeing how long my Filco's gonna last since I use the computer almost every day.

This is more or less an urban legend.

Although some mechanical like the BS keyboards are very durable, and some rubber dome are very poorly built, a good rubberdome easily outlast many of the microswitch based keyboards.

BTW the linear switches are surely way more durable than tactile ones.

I'm reluctant to trust keyboards that were made after I was born.

I'll be be getting an even older keyboard next week...

My Model M was manufactured in 1989 and it is still going strong.

Meanwhile, the 2 year old Logitech Wave keyboard that my parents use feels like jello.

MX blacks last for over 50 million presses.

This is the average life of a single switch, this is supposed to be, as the data supplied by cherry are not so clear.

BTW taking that value as good keyboard is made by 100+ keys, so you can have some switch that last 40000 actuations and other that last 60000, but even very few that last 90k or 100k and some that die after 5000 actuations.

The question was about the whole keyboard, not the switch.

Do you noticed that this argument is prone to be reversed ? :tongue.gif

I guess it depends on what brand. I was really excited about ordering a filco because of how long mechanical keyboards last, but I was wrong. After a few months my W key started developing the 'chattering' issue. It was my most used key since I do game quite a bit.

Exactly. Durability is debatable, but reliability is hugely in favor of RDs.

The real advantages of Cherry boards is the moddability and the fixability.

Surely not the durability and even less the reliability.
