what would i need to upgrade?

Thread Starter
i might get some extra cash soon and i'm looking to upgrade an old machine a little (my first PC).

currently my pc (Compaq) has:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+
1gb RAM
200gb 7200 rpm HDD
Integrated GeForce 6150 LE Graphics
don't know what the psu is, but i know it's stock
Dual Layer DVD/CD Combo Drive

i want make this a low power build to keep and stream all my music and to be able to run VLC, iTunes, foobar2000, Firefox, Audacity, and Synthesia, and be able to run a bunch of these at the same time. what do i need to upgrade? is 2gb ram good, or should i go for 4gb?

also out of curiousity, what do i need to run Portal 1?

Invest $$$ into that ancient computer is not recommended. But if you insist doing so, I would first upgrade RAM to 2gb or more, get a dual core processor and cheap radeon 5570.

First thing you need if you want to play portal 1 and 2:
Buy a videocard. Just a Geforce 9500GT, HD3650, HD5450, or GT220
anything faster will be bottlenecked by the slow athlon 3800+.

Your next upgrade should be replacing the board with AM3 and cpu with at least Athlon II dualcore.
You can keep everything else.

Your cpu is weak. 1 gb ram is not enough even to run OS alone with a couple of services running in the background. I also had nvidia 6150 and it couldn't even run gta san andreas properly so i really doubt it would be able to run portal 1 properly. So if you upgrade your GPU, you would need a good PSU. If you get a new GPU, that GPU will bottleneck your cpu and you'll end up getting a new cpu. Then with new CPU and GPU will not let you play games if you have 1 GB ram, then you'll get a new piece of ram....then when you'll have all these, you'll need a decent cooling and when you'll replace your current case with a new one....you'll end up throwing your current rig away :/

A piece of advice from my own experience.

If you'll upgrade anything in your primary pc, the price of it would decrease and in the end you'll end up throwing it away. Just try to sell it to someone for 100$ or less. Add about 100-150$ more and your pc would last you for some years if you plan on doing light gaming...but trust me, DO NOT upgrade that one, the price of your new upgrades would drastically decrease....your cpu is too outdated just like mine xD

This is barely worth investing any money into it.

Are you willing to upgrade everything, with a budget, and keep this PC as a backup one?

How much are you willing to spend on this? I would do a complete upgrade if possible. spending money on that rig wouldn't get you much of anything. If you don't have enough now, I recommend saving until you do.
