Overclock Temps

Thread Starter
I made a topic yesterday with regards to overclocking to GPU (eVga GTX460) i'm currently in the process of finding the top end core/mem speeds.

I'm using MSI AB / eVga Software / OC Scanner.

I'm currently at 770mhz core / 1540Mhz shader, I've tested this with OC Scanner and there isn't any artifacts however it's pushing temps up to 98 cel and is putting around 65-70% load on the GPU is this normal as i find those temps externally high?

Currently on idle with those settings it's at 31 cel

Thanks

65-70% load at 770 core yeilds 98'c? that sounds odd...but idle temp looks good, either you have bad case airflow or your gpu fan is not doing it's job properly at load. you on auto fan setting by any chance? if yes, apply a custom profile see if that helps.

i remember all the reviews saying the 460s were great overclockers, you should be able to get it much higher than 770 core if you sort out the temp issue. i never used evga software, personally, i think msi ab, furmark and heaven should prove sufficient. gameplay is still the best way to test temps and stability imo.

98C is much too high. What type of cooler do you have on that card? Is it the external exhaust or standard cooler? What voltage are you running this 770 clock at and what are your stock clock temps? I think an RMA may be in order.

iis that furmark with burn-in checked ?(100% fan ?)
(mine like that the temp goes to 102c)
but any games, and benchmark at full gpu load just go about 88-90c max on my 470 @1.000voltage)

I'm rather confused..

Even when i run it on stock speeds i'm hitting like 2 cel less then what i do when I've overclocked it

Like i said idle speeds seem fine,

I did take my case apart yesterday of which I've uploaded a picture. Cable management is quite tidy,

The front of the case is pulling air in from outside.
The fan on the bottom is pulling air in from under the case
The H70 is in a push/pull config with the heat going from the case out through the rad then into the air
The top fan is pulling air from in the case out into the room.

Now i'm not sure what temp this might add the fan on the floor of the case is blowing cold air onto the GPU so the cold air/heat if fighting against each other is it worth turning the fan out sucking hot air from in the case out underneath?

Also is it worth to keep overclocking the GPU providing it doesn't go over 100 cel? I have a eVga so i can still RMA it

Thanks

your fan config looks good, no need to change anything there imo

if the card at stock is only 2 degree cooler than when it's overclocked, then i highly suspect it's your gpu fan. what speed does the fan on your 460 run at when the gpu is stressed? it could be that the fan doesn't speed up when it's required, if that's the case, definitely get a rma.

Fan seems fine,

When set to manual it's spins at 3630RPM when it normally sits around 2130RPM.

I have noticed no matter what core i set/mem speed it never exceeds 98/99 cel.

Currently i'm sitting at
core - 816mhz
shader - 1632mhz
mem - 2145

OC scanner isn't picking any artifacts up.

Would it be suggested as upping the voltage, it's currently running stock 1037mV?

I'm not sure what to do in terms of the heat is producing, i would take the card apart and reapply some thermal paste but dont want to risk not being able to RMA it

If you're getting those temps at only 1.037v then it's RMA time, no ifs ands or buts about it, my 460 with maxed voltage @ 900Mhz doesn't hit 70C.
