G.SKILL Sniper 8GB 1600

Thread Starter
I'm looking to boost my computer for future games like BF3. My mobo is the Asus M4A87TD EVO.

Here is the ram I currently have installed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227297.

I am running the 2x2gb sticks stable at stock 1600mhz 7-7-7-24 @ 1.8v. They are rated up to 1.9v. People have reported getting them to 6-6-6-24 if set to 1333mhz and undervolting them to 1.7v.

Here are the sticks I am looking to buy. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231416

One thing I noticed is the majority of 1600mhz ram is CL 9. Let's say I was to find another 4gb of my CL 7 OCZ Platinum sticks, would they be faster then the G.Skill Snipers? Are CL 7 sticks just not common anymore? I noticed G.skill sells some CL 7 Snipers but for more then 2x the price of the CL 9.

If my OCZ platinum sticks are better, then does anymore know where I might be able to purchase another 4gb? Maybe someone has some used FS?

From what I hear, there isn't much performance difference between 1333/1600 and CL7/8/9. Also, I doubt your OCZ sticks are really that much "better" than the Snipers. It's just a trade-off between voltage and timings, for the most part.

However, I'd be interested to see you do a benchmark of 1600 @ CL9 and CL7 with your current sticks to see what effect the change has.

upgrading from 4GB of incredibly fast RAM to 8GB of slightly slower RAM has no merit in my opinion, especially for gaming

What about these ones http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231430. Close timmings but run at 1.5V. I am not sure about overvolting maybe someone else would know on here.

Seems the consensus is that I am fine with the Ram I currently have and 8gb is probably an overkill. BF3 does have in it's recommended specs 4gb so I probably will be fine. Ty all for your input

You shouldn't mix RAM kits with likely different ICs (i.e. significantly different voltage). Just a tip. Your OCZ memory is likely Samsung HCF0 ICs while the G.Skill is PSC, they don't match.

Thanks for the info xd. But I never once suggested I wanted to mix 2 different types of ram. I could have been more clear I guess, but I was planning on selling the OCZ ram if I bought the 8gb of G.Skill. I mean who honestly uses 12gb or 10gb of ram? And for you to assume I was going to combine them, that would be the only way. My three options are to just continue using my 4gb OCZ, find another exact set and upgrade to 8gb of my OCZ or sell the OCZ and buy the 8gb of G.Skill.

Oh, was throwing that out for any suggestions as well (@Lee79: The G.Skill is not as close in specs/ICs as you think)

Taking on an 8GB Sniper kit isn't a bad option; the 1.25V version apparently are able to OC somewhat decently, with some kits hitting 1600 @7-8-7. Not sure about the 1.5V version, I think they will hit 7-9-7 (equiv. to 8-8-8) as with most other 4GB DIMM DDR3-1600 kits.
