Nitrogen cooling no OC? How low can you go?

Hi,

It is my understanding that LN2 cooling is used to keep a super-overclocked CPU's heat output under control.

I was wondering as I sit floating in the depths of boredom-logic, is there a temperature in the other direction (really cold) where the cpu would no longer be stable?

I understand that if it gets cold to the point it will shatter when you breathe on it then it will probably not be posting but what is the lower temp limit for a cpu?

Electrical signals are cleaner with less heat, thus overclocking ability, the only issue that you might run into is a cold bug that some Intels have where they won't start below a certain temperature. That usually happens from what i've read ~ -40c on certain chipsets.

They have done AMD CPU runs using Liquid Helium so basically anything above absolute zero.

The issues you'd run into at lower temperatures are mainly just cooling related, as obviously it's hard to get cooler than liquid nitrogen for reasonable resource input.

Stuff like liquid helium is very hard to work with, and it only gets harder at lower temperatures. Liquid nitrogen is a reasonable compromise between cooling ability and expense and difficulty of use/containment that cooler substances suffer from.

NO2 is Nitrogen Oxide, N is nitrogen and N2 is nitrogen in the form found in the air.
Are you talking Liquid nitrogen or cooled nitrogen gas?

If it is LN2 (liquid nitrogen) the the lowest temp would be 77K or 196C (321F).

Some AMD Phenoms had a cold bug and refused to start under -30-40C

Most Phenom II chips do not have a cold bug, meaning they function perfectly at -190°C (about as cold as you'll ever see them get since they're actively putting off heat as well). With recent Intel chips, it gets a bit more complicated. The standard cold bug for a Gulftown (i7 980X) system is around -130°C, but gets colder as you remove memory sticks... so there's a triple channel cold bug, a dual channel cold bug, and a single channel cold bug. There are exceptions, though, as some 980X's have no cold bug at all.

And you cannot get a CPU cold enough to shatter from breathing on it. Even as close to absolute zero as you could get, the processor would not shatter. I believe that is only true for organic materials containing high amounts of water.
