[GK] 8 Grams Of Thorium Could Replace Gasoline In Cars. - Page 3

250MW powerplant for a typical auto?

250MW translates to 335,250 HP. That's three hundred thousand horse power. A two ton car with 300,000 HP would be an ideal replacement for the space shuttle orbiter.

250KW would make a little more sense, but >300 HP is still radical overkill for our daily drivers.

I believe someone probably has lost a decimal place, or that scientist is the nuttiest professor in the world.

Its only 8 grams. There are many way to seal it and prevent it from leaking. In a car crash most of the time the engine does not get much damage and if the damage is so big to damage the engine then you are probably already dead.

That's not the problem. What happens when there's a head-on collision? You get 8g of Thorium (or 16g if both are Thorium based) pulverized and released into the air. You can't make a containment strong enough to survive an impact like that that wouldn't make the car too heavy to be practical. So now you have several grams of an alpha emitter floating about in the air, getting into the lungs of passers-by and emergency personnel. Alpha particles are worse than other types of ionizing radiation, because they can ionize multiple atoms before their valence shell is full, which means you have two or three times as many free radicals and hydroxyls floating about interacting with your proteins and DNA.

One exposure might not be enough to have permanent results. Two or three exposures could cause throat, lung, or oesophageal cancer. Dozens of exposures (as in emergency responders) could cause multiple systemic cancers.

Radiation isn't something you dick around with lightly.

I think you're right and they meant 250kW. Megawatts are powerplant numbers lol.

300hp is your average V6 in america, an ideal target but they could totally get away with half that np, I agree totally.

I like how you concluded a well thought-out and educated post with this:

im still waiting on the price of this?
will it even be worth it to do it as thorium reactors are super expensive and i couldn't imagine a small reactor being cost effective.

~300HP for a V6 is about right and doesn't lead to chaos on the roads, but you're comparing gasoline engines to electric, for a engine which will be powering an electric motor, 250kW is ridiculous...

The Tesla Roadster doesn't boast those stats; it is powered by a 215kW motor, and it will reach 60MPH in <4 seconds, and >125MPH (it's governed in current models).

Consider that you're also propelling the weight of a small nuclear reactor and its containment. Just a bit heavier than an electric motor and batteries.

Can't they just build a new engine, and stick it in a normal looking car?

I don't want something that looks like they're trying too hard to be futuristic. That thing is but ugly. tongue.gif
