[GK] 8 Grams Of Thorium Could Replace Gasoline In Cars. - Page 6

It's not the oil running out that bothers me, it's the large (larger than the 4 great lakes combined) sized holes left in the earth from removing that oil that bothers me.....

It's not the oil companies that bother me, it's the cost of new tech that bothers me...

Even if this thing does push through, can you imagine the cost to own one of these suckers? Maybe in the new economy (after the collapse of the old one), we will see things like this, and I'm not thinking your average person or well to do middle class person will be having one of these unless it's on some serious credit...

Nevertheless, cool story chica...

You can't make a containment strong enough to survive an impact like that that wouldn't make the car too heavy to be practical. So now you have several grams of an alpha emitter floating about in the air, getting into the lungs of passers-by and emergency personnel. Alpha particles are worse than other types of ionizing radiation, because they can ionize multiple atoms before their valence shell is full, which means you have two or three times as many free radicals and hydroxyls floating about interacting with your proteins and DNA.

One exposure might not be enough to have permanent results. Two or three exposures could cause throat, lung, or oesophageal cancer. Dozens of exposures (as in emergency responders) could cause multiple systemic cancers.

Radiation isn't something you dick around with lightly.
im gonna say u are wrong on this one if they put there minds together they can make anything, how do u think they transport nuclear waste? this here thingy is indestructible even to a head on collision by a freight train

Ahh so yo could help me figure out what I'll do as a bio/chem engineer? I'm currently in the start of it, going to aim to end my schooling with a 3.0-3.5GPA but have no idea where to go after that.

I didn't know it was the same company, that's why I was asking.

The Tesla Roadster doesn't boast those stats; it is powered by a 215kW motor, and it will reach 60MPH in <4 seconds, and >125MPH (it's governed in current models).
Yeah, the Tesla also weighs over 700 lbs less than my car which has worse tires, weight distribution, and horsepower but still goes 0-60 in just over 6 but still pulls a 0-60 in just over 6 seconds and can go over 125 mph when not governed as well without getting slower as the battery depletes. 250kW is more than necessary but its also way more fun.

The only parts with potentially serviceable moving parts would be the turbine and related mechanics. I'm sure any automotive mechanic worth his salt would be able to take a few weeks of classes and be certified to maintain those. It's actually less involved than the thousands of moving parts, and intricate mechanical timing of ICE cars.
