Help with 2nd build ever

Thread Starter
I hope to god my first post is placed in the right section here My apologies for its ridiculous length.

I am building a computer for a friend of mine and have been spending a lot of time trying to research what works with what, and what could be the best bang for the buck. (he's got $2200 to work with, so this has been fun)

This guy calls storage space "memory", and uses Vista on his laptop, if that tells you anything. He burns lots of DVDs, and all he knows is he wants to be "future-proof"

I've been working exclusively with Newegg, and as it stands, here are the components I've picked out:

COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor

COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler

ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL X2

Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal SSD

Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal HDD X3

MSI N460GTX CYCLONE 1GD5/OC GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card (wish it were X2)

COOLER MASTER Silent Pro RSA00-AMBAJ3-US 1000W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.92 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

LITE-ON 12X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 12X DVD-RAM 8X BD-ROM 8MB Cache SATA Blu-ray Burner with 3D Playback iHBS212-08 LightScribe Support X2

COOLER MASTER Megaflow 200 R4-LUS-07AR-GP 200mm Red LED Case Fan

NZXT Sentry-2 5.25" Touch Screen fan controller

I've also got a 5.25 to 3.5 bay converter for the Rosewill 40-in-1 Card Reader, since the case doesn't have any 3.5" bays. So much for the USB 3.0 box..

My plan is to move the side 200mm fan to the open top slot, and put the red LED 200mm fan in the side. Going to put Windows 7 Pro on the SSD, and use [at least] one of the HDDs in the case's SATA dock.

My ever-growing list of questions:

1.) Am I DOING THIS RIGHT?? Can you see any conflicts?

2.) Am I wasting money getting the i7 2600K, instead of a 2500K? Same with the deluxe motherboard, vs. the pro?

3.) Am I going to need any cable extenders for this beast of a case?

4.) Should the side fan be intake, or exhaust?

5.) With the 3 HDDS, the SSD, and the 2 Burners, which devices should go to which SATA ports on the mobo? I guess the marvell ones are slower? But are they faster than the 3Gb/s ones?

6.) Should I be doing some sort of RAID action? I'd hate to have a drive go poof and kill them all in RAID0, but I don't want to lose 2TB in RAID5. Could add one more HDD i guess, but then what? Back to Question #5 lol

7.) Where are the fan controller temp sensors supposed to go? Will they reach even halfway?

8.) His monitor will be.. his HDTV. I'm getting a 10 ft. Mini HDMI Male to Male cable.. Will the video card.. send audio somehow?? I've seen too many different answers.

9.) Is the V8 going to be a problem with the RAM? I was looking at the H60, even the H100, but I dont know anything about getting those things installed, what with the tons of fans and dozens of screws..

10.) I need a good guide for optimizing the OS on a SSD (moving system folders, cache?, settings? yeah.. need one bad )

THANK YOU for ANY and ALL HELP!!!! I am nervous as hell...

Why the 460? For $2200, this build should have a newer gen. card. Also, check out the Crucial M4 ssd over the older c300. Cheaper + newer. If he does a lot of video encoding, it may be worth it to have a 2600k, but don't quote me on that.

Also, side fan should be intake.

Why does he need 6TB of storage O.o I would think you'd want to only use one 2TB drive and reallocate that money towards the graphics card, and are you sure you want to go HAF X? This guy doesnt sound like the type to take his comp into his own hands so you can probably just set him up with a mid-tower for less money like the Antec 300. That power supply is a bit much also (says the guy running a 460 on 850w) try one of these and cut even more money off. This build is both cheaper and faster

Also... does he really need a fan controller?

EDIT: 8GB of ram is way more than enough if hes just gonna burn CD's and game....

Not an antec 300. Those cases are way too small and not very good anymore. I suggest a Haf 922, NZXT Phantom, or a Cooler Master 690 II. Also that PSU should be overkill, get a corsair tx750 or so. If you'd rather have modular then get a HX instead of TX.

Let's see. Everything is compatible, but some things are too overkill for another.

1st, the case. HAF-X is way too big for you current build, unless you wanna be really futureproof. get a 690 II or sth. PSU can be smaller. Get the HX850. And spend the money on a 6950/6970/570 (skip the fan controller if you really nid to stick to a budget), the 460 is good, but on a budget of 2200? It's a little too underkill for the build.

2) 2700k is fine if he is gg to do other stuff apart from gaming. If he is only gg to game, get the 2500k, simple as that.

3) If you are gg with the HAF X, the CPU 8pin will mostlikely not be long enough to reach the 8pin connector at the top of the mobo, but fear not, the HAF X comes with a 8pin molex extender.

4) Intake, It's almost useless as exhaust really.

Cant really comment on the rest of the questions, BUT SKIP THE V8 PLZ. it's horrible, go with the H60. It's really alot easier than it seems to install, plus it is backplate ready for the H100. the V8 is alot harder to mount than many coolers of the same calibre. And get the Crucial M4, it is really good as an OS drive.

thank you THANK YOU

I..
switched to the Crucial M4 128GB SSD,
switched to the CM 690 II nVidia Edition case (which he will like, 'cause it's green),
dropped 8GB of the RAM,
switched to the H60 cooler,
stepped down to the TX750 PSU (I'll have to hone my cable management )

I don't know what he will fill 6TB with, but storage is huge to him, I guess.. The hot swap on top of the case is going to freak him out

Now I'm trying to figure out which fans I'll need to go where,

and whether to get the GTX 580 or 2 GTX 560 Tis in SLI..

EDIT: yep, I am completely lost on the fans.. which fans I can use where and for what.. how to actually install the H60 with some push/pull action.. Intakes/exhausts and controller and headers and *P00F*

I would go with a GTX 580 over SLI GTX 560 for him, as it sounds like he doesn't want to have to do any software tweaks, etc. While SLI has become super reliable, it would still be better for him to not have to worry about setting it up if he ever has to. That and the GTX 580 has a slot open for SLI later.

Looks like you have advice flying in from all directions, so I'll just pick off a few questions...

Everything you have listed looks like it should work together. There are some hardware choices I might change, but it looks like you're in the process of adjusting.
2.) Am I wasting money getting the i7 2600K, instead of a 2500K? Same with the deluxe motherboard, vs. the pro?
It depends on what your friend wants to do. If all he's going to do is burn DVD's then you don't need the 2600K. If he does any video editing or encoding, then the 2600K would be a benefit. As far as the MB, you really just need to look at what features you want.
3.) Am I going to need any cable extenders for this beast of a case?
I don't have any experience with that particular case, but if it's a full-size, I would think you might need an extension for the 8-pin CPU power cable. The rest should reach, although I personally would get extensions for all the major cables (24-pin, PCI-e, etc.) just to make cable management easier. You should have plenty of room to route cables around the back, but if they just reach you'd have to go acrosss the front.
4.) Should the side fan be intake, or exhaust?
How you set up your fans depends on your individual situation. In my case, I have 3 intakes and only one exhaust, on the top. I have very good positive air pressure and my temps are good. I had to play around with different arrangements to find the one that worked best for me.
5.) With the 3 HDDS, the SSD, and the 2 Burners, which devices should go to which SATA ports on the mobo? I guess the marvell ones are slower? But are they faster than the 3Gb/s ones?
I wouldn't use the Marvell ports. In fact, I recommend disabling the Marvell controller in BIOS. You will still have 6 SATA ports to use.
6.) Should I be doing some sort of RAID action? I'd hate to have a drive go poof and kill them all in RAID0, but I don't want to lose 2TB in RAID5. Could add one more HDD i guess, but then what? Back to Question #5 lol
Everyone's needs are different here. You'll already have a pretty fast setup with the OS on an SSD. You could set up a RAID, or keep them separate and use one for backup of important files.
7.) Where are the fan controller temp sensors supposed to go? Will they reach even halfway?
If they are anything like the temp sensors that came with my controller, you should be able to reach most anywhere in the case. I put one on my PSU, one on my HDD, and scattered the rest around to track incoming and exhaust air temps.
8.) His monitor will be.. his HDTV. I'm getting a 10 ft. Mini HDMI Male to Male cable.. Will the video card.. send audio somehow?? I've seen too many different answers.
HDMI does carry audio also.
9.) Is the V8 going to be a problem with the RAM? I was looking at the H60, even the H100, but I dont know anything about getting those things installed, what with the tons of fans and dozens of screws..
I don't know anything about that HSF.
10.) I need a good guide for optimizing the OS on a SSD (moving system folders, cache?, settings? yeah.. need one bad )

Once you get everything up and running, I would worry about tweaking your SSD. For now, all you need to do is make sure that you're in AHCI mode, not IDE. Everything else is done afterwards.

THANK YOU for ANY and ALL HELP!!!! I am nervous as hell...
