Biostar A770E3 and G.Skill compatibility

Thread Starter
Hey,

So I'm building a new computer with the following components:

Case: NZXT M59
MOBO: Biostar A770E3
Processor: Phenom X4 965 BE

Parts used from previous build:
PSU: Thermaltake 600W
GPU: Asus 4870 1 GB
HD: WD Caviar 640 GB

Last night I saw that the MOBO was compatible with DDR3 1333 so I ordered this RAM:
G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231422

And then of course, right after I ordered the RAM, I saw on the product page that it was compatible with only the AMD 890 Series and AMD 790 Series chipsets. The A770E3 is an AMD 770 (Northbridge) and AMD SB710 (Southbridge). Should I just return the RAM when I get it?

That specific memory is not listed on your motherboard memory compatibility list so i would say for the sake of argument, you should probably return it and get a more compatible set.
You could always try it when it arrives just to see, it certainly wont do it any harm, It might work but if you planning on gaming or overclocking, i would strongly suggest you return it for a kit more compatible, here's the QVL list for your motherboard to help you choose:

that list is so small... And most of those choices are old. Is it really that limited of a choice?? I think Biostar just stopped updating their pages.

Yes that is possible, some RAM modules that are not on that list will probably work, the ones in the list are the ones guaranteed by Biostar.
I think the stick's you've ordered will more than likely work, but you might run into problems when its comes to overclocking if you try.
My advice would be to try the sticks you have ordered, get your system up and running and then rum memtest for a few hours to check stability, if it passes you'll be fine but if it doesn't, return them and I'll do some research and find you a set that will work.

I appreciate all the help! Unfortunately, I won't be able to get to the computer until August 30th, but I will run memtest and see how it goes. I don't know if I want to bother with overclocking the RAM on such a low end MOBO, but I will definitely be gaming.

Well after looking more closely at the mobo and ram, I think that it will work with no real issues. If you get it all hooked up and it doesn't work or you have problems, PM me and i'll help you out.
Hope that helps dude biggrin.gif

All generic memory should work on all AMD motherboards with no problem.

I would recommend you look at other motherboard options however. The 3+1 phase on the A770E3 is not very 125W suitable or ready. For about the same price, the M68MT-S2P (a 4+1 phase) would be a better option.

If you can take on some extra cash, get the TA785G3HD or GA-78LMT-S2P.

Yea, I know its a pretty crappy MOBO for the rest of the build, but I'm getting it for free with the processor. I'll run it for a bit and then upgrade to a newer, more suitable option. Do you think the a770e3 will cause harm to the other components, maybe cause them to depreciate faster?

Oh, it's a Microcenter deal right? You will get a better deal and more reliable operation and better expandability/upgradeability as well with the Gigaybte 760G AM3+ board.

Yep, its a MC deal. I figure I'll just sell the A770E3 and upgrade to one of the ~$100 Asus or MSI boards once they drop down to ~$80 or get an open box deal. Can you please elaborate on the power phase you were talking about earlier? Its the first time I have heard of that. I know Biostar updated the board to suit the 125W better.
