[NW] Microsoft no longer considers Linux a threat for desktops - Page 12

Linux users in this thread should just take a deep breath and relax. Windows users use that OS for a reason. And Linux users also have their own reasons for using their chosen OS. You don't need to force your views on others.

Besides, in this article Microsoft is not saying that Linux is outdated or that it is inferior. It is simply saying that it has largely failed to make inroads into the consumer market, and the situation has remained unchanged. Other OSes such as OS X and Google Chrome which have the backing of large corporations however, are far more dangerous to Microsoft's OS marketshare, and so Microsoft will concentrate on those rivals.

I'm sure however that in the server market, Linux is a veritable foe, and will remain so for quite a long time.

I don't speak for all Linux users, but I realize that Linux isn't for everyone. I'm simply here to correct false information. And to have a little fun at the same time. =]

That's one of the main reasons for being an enthusiast, regardless of what you are an enthusiast about. Do you really think that OCN would be as active as it is if nobody thought that everybody else was wrong? It's the whole reason this thread didn't stop after 3 posts. Everybody here is convinced that they are right.

I find it funny how you singled out Linux users in this thread when it has been the (some) Windows users who are starting flame wars, trolling and spreading false information.

DirectX 9 could crush the current distribution of OpenGL.

Toms Hardware? Really? They're horribly unreliable, if you don't want to go from their rep alone, check the link in my sig, they treat people saying they're bad like kids would.

Not in this situation, Windows is mostly around due to everyone knowing it (i.e. The easy upgrade path from DOS, which predated Linux and only had a competitor in UNIX...Which wasn't free, to Windows) and not due to easier management, which is a faux argument in 2011...Ubuntu is easier to manage than Windows, graphics drivers are automatically upgraded, as is practically everything else on the system, and there's the Software Center, etc.

No, but you'd call me out if I was saying DOS was still used in Windows stuff and that the Windows desktop still didn't have widgets because XP doesn't, so why the double standard?

That said, the whole GUI>CLI thing is dumb, it's purely because people don't know the commands...My aunt still knows MS-DOS stuff extremely well and any competent server admin will tell you how much easier it is to use cmd to say, enter an IP than to do it via the GUI.

SImple.

Or just click the taskbar update icon....
He's talking about updating Ubuntu.

Although it has a taskbar icon too, and updates nearly every program as opposed to MS ones.

And no it is not easier, you forgot to mention when you open the command line, and also the task of remembering it
.
If i want to update i go Windows orb>all programs> windows update

Easy
It's no more difficult to remember "pacman -Syu" than remembering where the Windows Update thing is located.

Eh, I'd take the free polished turd over paying for an unpolished one.

Truth.

I bet you won't see many Windows users admitting no OS is perfect, there's a certain amount of security lacking in every OS, none of them have a perfect GUI, etc, it's too individual for any OS, OS X, BSD, Linux, Windows, Minix, Plan 9, UNIX, Solaris, etc to be perfect.

IMO Windows is only still going because of it's legacy - commercial and enterprise user's have used it for so long it'd be too much hassle to change.

Hahaha. That was pretty funny.

Anyway I don't know where editing windows themes goes in the EULA but it's all flexible. Also at this point the windows taskbar functionality is actually more flexible then anything I've seen on Gnome or KDE even with DockBarX.
