i7 overheating help

Thread Starter
Hey Everyone,

I just switched out my components to a new case. I had to remove my self contained water block from my i7-920 so I could transfer it.

I didnt reapply thermal gel.

I also had to rig up my 5 pin liquid cooling system to a 3 pin fan connector and am honestly not even sure if its getting power.

My temperatures were around 50-60c idle and would jump up to around 80c with any kind of load (even minimal load).

My i7-920 is overclocked to 3.8.

Do those temperatures indicate to you that the pump is working but I need to reapply thermal gel or that the pump isnt working at all??

I would start here in order to see if the pump is working correctly or not. This is most likely the cause because there are spaces or air now between your cooler and the CPU, which serve to insulate instead of dissipate heat.

yea im definitely picking some up after work either way im just trying to determine whether or not i should get a new heatsink for it as well. Basically just asking if those temperatures are possible with a completely uncooled overclocked i7

Nope, it's most likely that reapplying the thermal paste will do the job. I woduln't bother doing anything else unless proven otherwise.

Don't listen to this crap. 80C is not going to kill an i7 unless for extended periods of time. People here stress test at 75C for hours. Just don't use your computer until you re-apply the TIM.

obviously didn't listen to him.... used to hit 80c during prime tests when i had it at 4.0 all the time and i've had it for almost 2 years...the early i7s are hardy.

If that's the case then my i7-950 should have burst into flames when it hit over 95c for a couple of minutes while applying Indigo Xtreme.

Oddly enough, it still chugs along at its overclock just fine. You have no idea what you're talking about.
