Connecting Laptop SATA drive to desktop?

Thread Starter
Hey,
I require to empty my Seagate Go Flex 500gb because i'm giving it to my brother for a couple of days. Its got that changeable adapter , so Can I remove the USB 2.0 adaptor which reveals the drives SATA connectors. Can I attach a normal SATA power and data cable to the drive to increase transfer speeds?

Or will I cause damage to the laptop drive?

Thanks
:D

Yes you can do that, no it won't damage anything. I've done it numerous times.

Now transferring about 350 GB of data to my desktop drive. My max transfer speed is just touching 70MB/s. That okay?

Yes- it could be a slow drive, and large file transfers usually slow down. I would defragment your drive later though, and run ccleaner etc. It is possible it could be faster, but 70 mb/s will not take too terribly long.

Depends on what program you're using. Some (like WMP) use stupidly small I/O buffers - so they cause a large number of seeks when playing back files.

A 2MB song should take a drive about 20-30ms to read (total), but stupid media players will break that up into 64-256KB reads, causing many dozens more seeks.

Because... y'know... 30 extra seeks matters less than using an extra 1.5MB of memory.

I've had a Seagate Momentus XT as the boot drive on my desktop for several months now. A laptop SATA drive doesn't care what type of computer you hook it to.
