Need ME boot disk - Page 2

He was given this laptop from a church, my husband told him I'm an IT student, so he just gave it to him for me to "try" and fix, so that's what I'm trying to do. Maybe he's old and not too big into computers or something, I dunno. It's giving me some experience and it's giving him a laptop. He basically just wants to get on the internet, that's how I understand it.

Very much this. PuppyLinux is fantastic on my old laptop. Crunchbang is really good as well on old, slow hardware. Windows ME was the Vista of the 90s.

nah - at least Vista was pretty stable, it just ran dog slow and made decisions about how your computer was going to run without bothering to ask you. Me wouldn't run for more than a few hours without crashing...

You can download a lot of Microsoft OSes online, but I am sure you knew that already. It's of dubious legality, though, even if you intend to use a legitimate key to install it. The only problem is that Windows ME was such a steaming pile of crap that I can't imagine anyone would waste time offering it for download. ME makes Vista look like a well-executed OS release.

Puppy Linux is definitely the correct route to take on something that old. I use it successfully on old Compaq Presario laptops with K6-2s in them. If you must have Windows, use Windows 98se or 2000. Don't stick anyone with Windows ME unless you hate them and want them to go away and never come back.
