Time to RMA?

Thread Starter
Think I killed my cpu:

- Shut the computer down the night before, turned it on in the morning and it wouldn't post.
- Board debugs lights indicated GPU was to blame. Swapped GPU for known good card, same results
- Swapped ram for known good ram = same results
- Swapped board for known good board = same results
- Only thing left was the cpu and swapping out the cpu for a known good cpu with the original stuff = post and boot

So it seems like my 990x died. Anything else to check? Cpu looks clean, no burn marks.

Anybody know much about the RMA procedure, I got it 2nd hand, so I'm hoping that isn't a problem.

Google found me this, although it's out of date more recent posts seem to qualify it as still the normal procedure and that receipts aren't necessary:

http://forums.vr-zone.com/troublesho...procedure.html

However this post claims receipt is necessary:
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...intel-rma.html

And these two say nothing is needed:
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...intel-cpu.html
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...ma-policy.html

I guess maybe I'll just have to call and find out

Dont worry man happens to us all. Closely analyze the back of your CPU. VERY VERY closely and look for a minor burn mark. my e8400 fried and had 3 very faint burnmarks i could see. Wasnt my fault it fried either ><

They are pretty easy to do a rma with. Do you have the retail heatsink as you will need that to do the rma with. You can do live chat or call them.

Or call them, as it would be easier just to call them.

Yeah I have the retail packaging luckily, normally I don't keep them! Never had an intel CPU die before on me. I guess it's the luck of the draw!

So I give them a call, the guy wanted to know motherboard type, bios number, memory model number, nothing off of the cpu box, but some of the numbers off of the fan on the stock heatsink.

He then tried to blame it on the memory requiring 1.65V which made it incompatible and that gulftown only allows 1.5V max on ddr3. I pointed out that I'd only heard that being true for sandy bridge, but he assured me it was true for gulftown too. It seems from the datasheet that the max dc spec is 1.575V, although the absolute max ratings are 1.875V to Vss, so it's not like it broke that last rule.

Still it sounds like they're going to RMA it, so we'll see. I'll kick up a storm if they try and deny it based on the memory kit being 1.65V though.

Aww man, that sucks. sorry to hear your proc dies. I just had a bad proc from intel, but luckily I found out after a couple of weeks and some testing and Microcenter took it back no problem.
