Digital Coax Sound Card

Thread Starter
Hey all, I have a Bose 321GS Series 2.
Its a HTIB with two speakers, outputs DTS 5.1
I have an Asus M4A79T Dx series MB. I use the the onboard realtec with the digital coax cable to my Bose. My Toslink is being used up by my 360.
I never considered getting a sound card but now that I have been watching HD movies from my pc to my TV at 1080P, I am def considering it.
From wat I hear, a soundcard is much better than any onboard soundcard.
I do not know which to get. I know the most talked about are the Titanium HD & the Asus Xonar STX. I just do not want to spend that much.
Is there any others that aren't to expensive? 100 or less?

Also, I do not game much, mostly music & movies.
If I did convince myself to just spend the xtra & get Titanium HD or Asus Xonar STX, which would better suit my needs?

Thanks!

Wouldn't the sound card make a big difference when I'm playing movies?

I did Google your 321 set up quickly and didn't learn all that much tbh.
If you were using the analogue outputs on your onboard realtek thingy then yes, upgrading the soundcard would produce an audible difference as the audio is being processed before it leaves the PC, however if you are using either the coax or toslink option then the audio processing is effectively moved off the card to your Bose set up.

For example my laptop has an onboard realtek card and I have the option to output anywhere from 2.0 to 5.1 in analogue to my speakers. Do I use it? Hell no, it sounds like arse. If I connect the laptop directly to the 5.1 I'll just use the toslink output and bypass it altogether.
My Z5500s are currently out of service however as I'm using a rather nice sounding 2 channel set up these days and the soundcard got upgraded to do it a bit of justice as it's all analogue.
If I were only using the coax on my laptop then I would not have upgraded.

But I digress, If you are firing the raw Dolby/DTS stream to your Bose set up from the PC when watching a movie, then you could have the best soundcard in the world and it will only sound as good as the audio processing ability of your Bose thing.

You could just go all-out and buy a new soundcard and speaker set up.

Ahhh I see remmert. Yes I am getting DTS 5.1 on a digital coaxial cable already. It does sound amazing, however I thought if I had a better sound card it would sound better. Dumb me,
Thanks for clearing that up!

Nothing dumb about it at all. If you've got a question, just ask - that's why these forums exist. Glad I could help.
