Best 24" for 1920x1200? (IPS or PVA/MVA) Upgrade Dell 2405 FPW?

post #1 of 14

So... I've purchased a Planar SA2311W which is a 120 Hz 3D monitor.

The 120 Hz is almost life-changing but I hate the 23" 16x9 aspect ratio and while the 3D looks breathtaking, I'm not sure I could wear glasses every single time I want to play a game.

However, the Planar SA2311 is a TN panel and next to my Dell 2405 FPW (IPS)... it looks MUCH better?!?

The Dell 2405 FPW is over six years old at this point so I'm guessing that it's pretty outdated.

Anyways - what would be a significant upgrade from my Dell?

I'd like the following:

* 24" (true 24" and not 23" or 23.6")
* 1920x1200
* Normal RGB (not the "wide color" that some monitors offer; I tried one and it was awful)
* Significant upgrade from the Dell 2405 FPW
* HDMI input
* Decent for gaming (under 30ms input lag since that's what my Dell 2405 has and I don't notice it too much)
* Will be used "mostly" for gaming but I'm not a hardcore gamer what-so-ever

Thanks for any suggestions... I'm not sure if I will keep the Planar SA2311W but I'm just looking for other options, etc.

The Dell U2412m sounds right. It's a 6-bit IPS, but if you think a recent TN panel looks better than your existing Dell, I'm guessing this won't be a problem. I'm not 100% positive if it has an HDMI input. My Dell U2410 does, but I've heard some Dell monitors have been going without it.

I'm not too sure of other brands equivalents, but it's one option at least.

Also, The 24" panels that are really 23.6" are usually the 1920x1080 panels. The 1920x1200 panels that say they are 24" are usually 24".

The U2412m does not have HDMI inputs.

Other than that, I hear great things about both the U2412m and the U2410.

While the U2412m still doesn't offer a HDMI input, it's probably your best bet. No differences in image quality between HDMI and DVI (same cable internally basically) and you can always get adapters if you are hooking up HDMI devices.

What's the difference between the U2412 and U2410?

The U2410 has HDMI (and other ports?), etc.

How does sRGB emulation look on it? When I tried the wide gamut 2407 (I think), it looked really, really awful when playing regular games, etc.

U2412m is avery cheaper version of U2410.
U2412 have a low quality IPS panel, very slow responsive time, no good factory calibration than U2410.

Regardless of the U2412 or U2410, how big of a difference is it really going to be over my existing Dell 2405?

I vaguely remember my 2405 6 years ago. *Wow, its been that long?* And considering if you've had one that long, your brightness and clarity will be better as a result of a new CCFL and new updated LCD panel technology.

I just recently got the u2412m, and got a great deal at $319.99
but you asked what the difference are between the 2410 and 2412.

the 2410 is wide gamut, has a card reader, and is a higher bit panel.

from using the 2412 I can say it has been great so far. image quality and response time are great in my opinion and the only complaint I have had is the displayport. otherwise one of the perks over the 2410 for me was srgb, led backlight, and was far cheaper.
