Subs for PC power question

Hi,

Just out of curiousity i've been looking at a 1000watt amp and a 700watt Vibe subwoofer for the computer.

AMP

Subwoofer

I just read this article on ehow which states this:
Article

Quote:
First find the max wattage rating of your amp. Let's say it's a 300 Watt amp. Now divide that by 12 as in 12 volts and you get 25 amps. So at 12 volts it needs 25 amps to reach max power. The example attached to this step wouldn't be sufficient with its pathetic 18 amp peak power. It's so low because they split the normal 12 volt rail into two.
Amp: 1000watt

1000 / 12 = 83.3amps

So i was looking at a random power supply, this Antec one is just an example.

Power supply

If we take a look at the sticker on the side of the power supply we can see what it's max current ratings are.

We can see that it has 6x12v rails. The amp in total requires 83.3amps and each of these 12v rails outputs 38amps.

So 38x3 = 114amps

So if i were to take 3x12v rails and wire it up to the amp would it work or is it more complex than this?

No, don't do it. That amp isn't 1000w anyway. Not to mention its a 4 channel amp, that's meant to be used in a car for SPEAKERS, not a sub.

If you seriously did buy that stuff, save it for a car (and do it right), or return it and buy proper home gear. I've done what you're talking about before. It ends in disaster for the PSU and amp (if not fused). Plus you'll NEVER get full power from your amp, even if the PSU can "technically" handle it.

EDIT:
Honestly, even if you do have a car or will get one soon, I'd still return it.

Because that equipment is overpriced and garbage. Vibe Audio is a no name brand that specializes in Wal Mart and Best Buy equipment basically. I'm not entirely sure what their exact distributer is.....but I know its low end stuff.

For that kind of price (in USD, not sure about UK currency), you could have gotten quality equipment from AudioPipe, Sundown, Fi Audio, Alpine.....something good.

Plus, that amp won't power the sub because its a 4 channel, trying to push just 1 channel off it. And it won't put out ANYWHERE NEAR its rated power.

Basically, it's like buying a 1500w Diablotek PSU for your computer, that only puts out 250w (amp wise). The sub you bought, its like buying a WD Green drive but it was advertised to have SSD speeds.

If you REALLY want to build a nice sub, get a good driver, put it in the PROPER enclosure for it, and use a rack amp on it or plate amp. I honestly wouldn't know where to shop at in the UK though. Tried searching through your ebay links. I can find Maxxsonics built subs which aren't TOO bad. Can't find Dayton equipment though. Partsexpress I know ships worldwide, but I fear the shipping would be stupid to ship across the ocean.

JBL
I always tend to laugh at stuff like that. Good install, but with low end equipment.....

Those JBL's are "meh" at best. If you want something to just tinker around with, try to find an Alpine Type S. But for $50 you're not going to get much of a woofer at all. The Alpine Type R is the lowest I would EVER recommend going for a good sub. The Type S isn't bad, but its still just a low end speaker.

My advice:
If this is for a car setup, you need to spend more to get more. I won't spend less than $100-120 on a single subwoofer anymore (Type R). The subs I personally want are $250 each. Get a GOOD amp to power your subs. The subs are first priority, amp has to match the subs though (power and impedance).

If this is for a home audio setup, again...this is going the wrong route. Maybe look into the Polk dB 12 as a starter sub (around $70 USD). You'll want something with a decent amount of excursion, and a somewhat low power rating for a home system. And you'll need power from somewhere, which I would recommend a plate or rack amp for that use.

And obviously, both setups would need the PROPER box for the sub. That JBL video you posted, he's using too small of a box for those subs, they probably sound horrible in that enclosure.

EDIT:
JBL is bad because you're paying for the name, and the name alone. Those JBL subs are based off the same design as the low end Pioneers are. They won't take rated power at all, and they honestly don't go very low.
