480's yes/no - Page 2

Also, the terms "Watercooling" and "on a budget" don't belong together, period. You always end up skimping and then your setup looks and performs like crap.

Yeah I know I have 3 watercooled rigs (not kit rigs) but when I look at that 1700.00 pair of watercooled 500 series cards on the EVGA site the words "not in my budget" come to mind.

Here is what I am talking about

The idea of "B stock" 480's and some Danger Den blocks are high on my "wish list" I do not know if I can swing it though, would really like to.219.00 for the B stock cards and got to be 125.00 or so for Danger Den blocks.Koolance blocks are down around 85.00 if I remember right. Why pay 190.00 or so for ebay "mystery cards" when B stock is 219.00?What is overclocked ppd? hopefully 17K perhaps? maybe my expectations are a bit high but I just do not know. Those DD blocks just look so nice.

pulling 17k with 820/1640 clocks on mine...air cooled folds at 72-75c...you should do better under water e: (ppd I mean, of course temps)
The newer 580 pulls the same amount of power. ~6 watts less. Why do people say it takes less? - Because it runs cooler -> and why is that? - BECAUSE IT HAS A BETTER HEATSINK (vapour chamber).

I am planning to get a 480 in the future but under water for sure.

I have two 480's in sli. If you get two, you get free heating in your room.

I think I am going to locate this rig out in my Arizona room again (it is a big screened in porch, very common here in AZ) as there is flat no way I could deal with the heat.I was staying of the porch so to speak during the height of our monsoon season, now the weather is calming down.

PCC, I do not recommend going for a 480 at this point.
I had one under water, and it got 18k ppd when running a high OC.

You would be better off with a 550 or 560.
550s can be found cheap, two would cost less, probably use less electric and produce more PPD than a 480.

It is true that the 480 is a heat factory. Running on air would meant the card gets hot and you wouldn't be able to OC much.

Love the 480's

If you're not concerned about the power draw and heat then get one.

At times they can beat a GTX 570 due to memory and other small things
