HDD dying?

Thread Starter
Hi, I've been having troubles with my computer for the last few months, but lately, the problems have gotten out of control.

My HDD is constantly making noise. A crunching, skipping sound. It's pretty loud. It picks up when I do anything on the computer, and slowly subsides after doing nothing for a while. The noise it makes seems to correlate with the problems I'm having. Everything is slow. Opening Firefox, iTunes, etc. takes nearly a minute. Switching tabs in Firefox can take upwards of ten seconds. As I'm typing this, I'm waiting for the letters I'm typing to catch up.

Basically all of the applications I use will occasionally go Not Responding, and take a minute or two to unfreeze. Also, three to five times a day, my screen will randomly go black for about 10 seconds. My HDD makes its signature choking sounds, and eventually the screen comes back with a Windows notification informing me that my Display Driver has stopped working and has recovered.

Also, once or twice a day the computer will freeze completely for an indefinite period of time. I once had it freeze during a game of SC2, and it froze like this. To see if it would unfreeze eventually, I went to bed instead of restarting the computer. When I came back the next morning, it was still frozen on the exact same screen.

I honestly have no clue whats going on. Is my HDD dying? Do I have a virus? Is it my CPU? Something is seriously wrong, but I'm not sure how to find out what. I'd appreciate any help you can give! If you need any more information about the computer please ask.

Thanks!

I bought and installed the HDD in my January of this year. I agree it seems really soon for it to be failing, I'm wondering if it was faulty to begin with.

If it's relevant, I had a P67 board before the recall and exchanged it ASAP. Not sure if that would have anything to do with this.

if you only bought it last january it should be under warranty so i would rma it cause it definatly sounds as thought you got a faulty drive but also seeing you got a p67 board it could be that because the early p67 boards hade a problem with the sata 3 controlers so it could be that if so you should get that board replaced

If possible grab HDTune and take a screenshot of the Health tab - post it here.

Do you have a second computer available? Are you familiar with any bootable tools like SystemRescueCD?

I have HDTune, I'll run that health test right now. And I do have a second computer available but I'm not familiar with those tools.

I did have a P67 board with the SATA problem, but I exchanged it immediately upon the announcement of the chipset issue. I did have the HDD in question attached to the faulty board for a while though.

It's not a test - it just reports back SMART info that can reveal whether a drive thinks it's dying or not.

Sorry for the long time between replies, been pretty busy prepping for school.

Anyways, Kramy, I checked that tab on HDDtune and it's totally blank.

I ran both the Benchmark and Error Scan tabs and the Health tab remained blank. Is there something i need to do to retrieve the info your screenshot shows? The Error scan returned all green squares and everything looked good.

Also, good news, Windows update ran last night and after the following restart, I haven't had a Display Driver crash or a total freeze. So (assuming those are gone for good,) all that's left is the super slowness when opening/closing, etc... and the frequent Not Responding errors.

Thanks everyone for your help
