Extended display with 1 monitor on full screen?

Thread Starter
is it possible to use an extended display and then run a full screen application on the second display, while leaving the desktop intact on the other?

ive tried this before and usually i will end up with 2 black screens when i run a full screen application

im sure i could probably force windowed mode (alt enter or whatever it is) but i want to know if there is some way to actually have something running full screen on the second monitor (windows 7 ultimate 64)

That should work.

At home I have 2x24" side-by-side in landscape and have them set as extended desktop in windows. When I'm watching a movie, I can go fullscreen on the left monitor and still work on other apps in the right monitor.

At work I have 3x23" side-by-side in portrait and when not using my Eyefinity profile I have them set to extended and can do the same thing.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

Depends on the game in question. And the drivers you are running. For me, some games put side screens blank and some don't. Sometimes it's even possible to change states by switching between windowed and fullscreen a few times.

But even if they weren't blank, you couldnt' do desktop work on them while gamng, because that has teh same effect as alt tabbing

hmm...silly me...I'm not a gamer, so I didn't think about the first app being a game. doh.gif

That would make a difference...

ur right, i didnt even think about that, id essentially have to alt tab out of the game to even get the mouse back on the desktop anyway

It works pretty flawlessly in any games that have Fullscreen Window Mode though. World of Warcraft for example I can have Full Screen on one monitor and actively be playing while doing whatever else on the second. Media Player Classic also has a mode that forces a second monitor to not lose focus in full screen mode for Movies and such so you can continue working on the other monitor.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. I personally run all sorts of games with two monitors and it works fine. An alt-tab will usually minimise the game/black screen it though unless you run in windowed mode (which works really well).
One thing to note though is some games hate a second monitor, such as if I try to play shogun 2 with a second monitor it can freeze on me so I generally remember to turn it off before playing.
