Unless you'd be willing to redo the wiring on the PCI-E cables, I wouldn't recommend a card that will draw too much power.

right now, i'm deciding between those exact cards.

i should probably mention, i am not a gamer. i primarily do video/photo work. I edit in Sony Vegas, and it's not GPU heavy...i just want a good quality card thats less pathetic to look at than my GT430.

but this situation with me cutting cables is another story in my life. i'll never cut another cable again hahaha.

Im planning on buying a beefier card soon, but a while back, when cable management wasn't my thing, i cut off the 6 pin cables from my PSU figuring i wouldn't upgrade any time soon. It's the PSU in my sig rig.

now, can i use one or two of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812201004

to power a new card? If not, i'll spring for a new modular PSU, but i'd like to see what i can do with only a couple 4 pin molex connectors to work with. Also, are there any good GeForce cards with only 1 6pin power connecter? i noticed the Radeon 6850 only has one, but i'd like to stick with Nvidia.

Thanks for any advice!

Chris

If you're just looking for a larger card, check these out.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500213
(same card in black) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500159

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5639261&CatId=3669

I would go with this card though.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125341

If you want a performance increase, don't pick either of the 420's. They'll save you some power usage and heat, but they won't do too much work. The 450 would be a great choice though.

I wouldn't cut a brand-less budget PSU let alone a TX650. I will say one thing: That would have never happened in a HAF. lachen.gif

thanks Jaguar...but i love the look of the shrouds on the 550 ti and the 6850s and cards of that style...i have an all white mod theme, and i'll be painting the shroud white. that's why i'm going with a much bolder design.

...but it did in my A05...cable management is by far this cases WORST attribute. but whats done is done, and all of you have made very useful suggestions.

It just hurts to imagine the pain the TX650 went through when you mangled it frown.gif
I used to have one of those, awesome psu.
Ran GTX460 1Gb sli + GT220 physx + Q9550 @3.8Ghz with 7 fans/3x hdd+1x optical without even the psu fan ramping up when furmark multigpu + IBT very high.

But did you mangle one of the molex cables too? Since you said you only found one molex cable? Or is the 1 out of 2 molex cables being used?
Since the TX650 should have 8 different wires coming out, 1x24pin, 1x8pin, 2x pci-e, 2x sata and 2x molex.

And you don't need to have the molex connections for the pci-e adapter from 2 different cables.
You should receive a 2x molex -> 6pin pci-e adapter when you purchase a gpu which requires external power.
This is the layout of your psu.
So, pci-e cables are out, and one molex cable is used?
Just connect the adapter to 2x molex from the unused molex cable and be done with it.
lolololololn.jpg

And I would get a GTX550Ti

i'm going to do exactly as you describe, and i appreciate the details you provided!

i just opened the side panel and remembered that what i have is one molex cable coming out of the PSU that i cut the last 2 plugs off of (to save space)...i sealed the remaining wires with heatshrink, but luckily they're out in the open and easily accessable. i'm just going to reattach the rest of the cable so i have 2 unused molex headers and use the supplied power adapter and call it good.

other than that, i'll have to order a white sleeved 6 pin extention to match all my other cables, but that's just for appearances.
