[Beginner] Portable folding?

Thread Starter
Hi all

any portable folding software?
also, is it possible to fold "occasionally" and still be part of the OCN folding team?

I apologize for asking probably dumb questions but, hey, folding beginner here xD

by portable folding, do you mean on a Laptop, or smartphone etc.....cause smartphones etc, clients do not exist...yet lol

it is possible, just get a program called HFM installed to monitor your Folding stats, and make sure you can complete the Work Unit before the deadline.

There are many guides on OCN to set up HFM, just type in the search bar @ top right, HFM setup guide

Hmm, he could be asking about "portable software," self-contained applications that can be run from a USB drive without needing to be installed (I used to use portable web browsers to do my surfing at work a couple years back).

Is that what you're asking about, OP? I haven't seen something like that, but maybe someone could shed some light. My guess is that folding software needs to be installed because of how it uses the CPU, but that's a pure guess.

Well, the v6 console clients are portable; however, SMP client bonuses are voided if the WU is uploaded on a different computer to the one that downloaded it.

Not an issue for GPU WUs; you can carry them on a USB and Fold them anyehere.

yes, by "portable folding software" I meant exactly that, sorry didn't knew it could bring confusion.

well I will probably give it a try on my rig but I am interested in the portable solution as well so I can help a bit more

basically, this "v6" one is the most suitable for my gear? it will use all cores and such?

Yup. But like I said, using the SMP client on multiple machines is fine, but it must be uploaded on the same computer it was downloaded on, otherwise you will lose the majority of the points.

Ergo, if you're going to be moving between computers with decent GPUs, your best bet is sticking to the GPU client (though I'd caution, there are two different clients for GPUs depending on whether the GPU is a Fermi or not)

Zodac, if he's going to go CPU folding, I'm curious - what gives better overall points, the SMP client without bonuses or the unicore CPU client? I've never used the unicore client, but I know I was getting an average of a few hundred points per WU on my SMP client before the bonuses kicked in yesterday.

Well, SMP would probably still give better PPD, since the base points of each SMP WU is much bigger than those of Unicore WUs. On the other hand, the final deadline for SMP WUs are only a few days; Unicore WUs are usually a few weeks. And if you miss the deadline, you get no points for the WU at all.

none of the machines I will be using have a discrete GPU, but my main rig is the one you see in sign that's why I would like a folding client that uses all CPU cores.

on a side note, I am totally missing the "upload" part... doesn't the client do everything by itself? *scratches head*
