New Q6600 very hot compared to old one??

Hi there everyone..

Since my Q6600 killed itself a few months ago, i have got another one very cheaply. I tested my overclocks and managed to get it stable with voltage set to 1.35v in the bios compared to my old one needing 1.38v in the BIOS to achieve a stable 3GHz overclock.

However, with this new one i get idle temps of around 33C and load of about 71C if i run intel burn test. The question really is, how come it runs some 10-12C hotter idle and load when it is again another G0 stepping Q6600 with the same SLACR intel stamp?

I use the same Zalman cooler i used before, the only difference is this time i used Arctic MX-2 or whatever it is instead of my Arctic Silver 5. Apparently the MX-2 is much better???

Any help would be appreciated

you may have not reapplied the MX-2 properly.
i would remove the cooler and then have a look at the contact pattern left behind, this often tells you if there was a mistake. ie. paste not on one side etc...
remove the old paste and then reapply the mx-2.
usually you use a grain of rice sized amount, but i also leave a small dot of paste each side, so it looks like a +.
Push down the cooler and give it a little twist of about 20 degrees to one side, never relift the cooler once pushed down as this will introduce air bubbles into the paste.
tighten the cooler according to manufacturers specs.

also is it warmer now than when you last tested your old Q6600? as higher ambient (room temp.) will give you higher idle and load temps.
My load temps were 60.C in March, now i am getting 71.C ish. as its warmer now.

thanks for the reply, i have reapplied the compound and have also used a different type with the same temps. I usually use a grain of rice size however the MX-2 is very thick/sticky and this makes it hard to spread. Im thinking about ordering some Arctic Silver 5 again to see if i can get the temps a little lower. Today idle is 35, however the room is pretty hot probably around 26C or so.

It was winter when i looked, but year round the highest i ever saw idle was about 26-27C in summer. So in that respect it is probably about a 7-8C rise in idle temps.

Do you think the cleaners and surface purifiers are good and actually make a difference in heat conduction/dissipation?
