Squeezing my Q6600 beyond 3GHz

Thread Starter
Hi guys. I was content with 3GHz until i bought my new graphics card, and since it seems to bottleneck, now I want to go as high as it can survive. Im getting an i5 2500k for Christmas (a long way away i know, but my salary is my salary) so it only needs to last until then. Im currently simply say at 3GHz on a x9 multiplier with no changes to Voltage or Memory or anything else. My Motherboard is in my system specs and the question is, can you guys help me?

Use the memory divider and keep your ram around its rated speed and timings. to make it quick I would just raise your CPU voltage up to around 1.4v Q6600s are good to 1.5v providing cooling is good enough. Then I would raise the CPU clock to 366mhz and see if it boots then if it does. I would then try raising the clock to say 380mhz and see if it boots for 400mhz you will proberly have to raise the CPU voltage to 1.5v or slightly higher I wouldnt expect you to get anymore than 3.6Ghz out of it with that board.
Once you get to where you think you are happy with give it a stress test with prime95 v2.53 while runing realtemp to keep an eye on your temps.

I have a H50 Water cooler as i was thinking about this a while ago, but now its a necessity rather than an experiment as i dont want to let my graphics card sit underused for 4 months.

i have had one of those motherboards, and i struggled to get my old E3300 past 3.1ghz, they are poor for overclocking.

as macsbeach98 said, unlink your ram, so in the ram divider, set it to its stock speed eg. 800mhz, 1066mhz, etc....
this way the ram will not interfere with the cpu.
then just do as he says, raise the vcore to 1.4v and then keep bumping up the fsb by 20mhz at a time, then boot into windows and run Intel burn test for 30 mins, if stable then raise by another 20 mhz and repeat test again and on and on.....

Also if you have 4 sticks of ram dont forget to raise the NB (northbridge) voltage a couple of notches.

A Q6600 will probably fry your MOSFETs or a cap on that board if you push enough voltage. OC at your own risk.

If my memory is correct, my OC is set using 1.35v. Im on the same boat as you, I should be ordering a 6870 soon and I dont want my CPU to be a bottleneck.

*Also should be upgrading to sandy bridge in December.

a x9 multiplier? that sounds mighty low keep the multi at its max ..... q6600's are easily capable of 3.4ghz, just bump up the vcore and raise the fsb when you've unlinked your ram,

don't go over 1.45, but you should be ok
