Second HD 5850 when prices drop (16x/4x)

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of getting a second HD 5850 when the prices drop maybe even go second hand to save more money but my board only supports 16/4x for CF so if I could get a 5850 for under £90 do you think it would be worth it. Also before any one says I know I would need a better PSU

A new 5850 even in 4x mode would bring a performance benefit, there's no doubt. However it may be a better way to achieve an even bigger performance boost: supposing you manage to sell the 5850 you use now for some 70£, adding the 90£ you'd have a budget pretty close to the 6950 1GB street price.
That said I doubt you'd need a new PSU even in an Xfire rig; I have a pretty similar config that takes about 290W Furmark+Prime of about 240W in games. The real consumption is less as you must take the efficiency of the PSU into acount so the build consumes about 200W in games. Adding a second 5850 wouldn't push that over 350W or 400W at the plug. If your PSU can provide 450W of power a new one isn't mandatory.

up here, they still run for 200-300 CAD. UGH.

Makes me want to just grab 2 7950s instead.

YOu'll be hideously CPU bottlenecked with your CPU.

My Phenom 2 x6 at 4.1Ghz couldn't push my old 5850 crossfire to 100%

In some games there was only a 10fps increase over a second card.

The difference between 16x/16x or 16x/8x or 16x/4x crossfire, is negligible.

Hard op did a review on that.

Dont worry, you are go2go.

An extra hd5850 will bring you nice performance increase, you are future proof.

It would definitely be worth it but you won't find prices dropping on 5850s, they are discontinued cards so will be selling for more money, if anything. You will need to grab one used.

As for the guy saying his x6 at 4.1 couldn't run two 5850s... he had a bad overclock more than likely. I had no issues with my two 5850s, even when I overclocked them! Some games will not see a big performance increase but most will. I nearly doubled my fps in every game I played.

Anyone have the link to this review?, I'm curious which specific platform they tested. I have this vague memory after reading some review that 16x/4x is acceptable on Sandy Bridge but I thought it was a major handicap on other older platforms.

This is 16/4x CF with 5770 http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/772...sfire-16x.html

I will be looking at second hand for this card not going to do CF just yet waiting for price to drop on here or ebay and my PSU is a gimp it only has 2 x 6+2 pin connectors and both used by my card at the moment

Go for it. I added a 2nd 5870 and its running on the x4 lane - no regrets!

I can play pretty much any game at almost extreme settings, except for when I want to do eyefinity - then the VRAM becomes the limitation.
