dont bother running ubuntu on your zacate E350 - sloooooowww..

After i was so impressed with the way zacate E350 ran windows 7, nice acceleration smooth scrolling and quick we page access i thought i'd see more of the same converting to Ubuntu but it turned out to be the opposite, its slow as a dog, about equivalent to the linux motorola wrote for my tegra 2 atrix phone.

the phone is actually faster surfing the web.

Lesson: Keep Zacate on a real OS like windows 7 that has people writing drivers who get paid to make it work. Ubuntu is lame except for a few dedicated things like servers and certain science apps and even thoughs have bigtime work behind the hardware specific drivers. Ubuntu is going downhill IMO.

What?

I use ubuntu for my e350 and it works great. I just put win7 on it yesterday and I can already tell that Ubuntu is faster. Just try to avoid the unity interface which is horrible and it should run just fine.

If it has the bar on the side with all the icons, that's unity. Log out and try ubuntu classic. There will be a menu to it at the bottom of the login screen.

^^
This. Unity does run horribly on almost all hardware. Poorly optimized. If you can, switch to Ubuntu 10.10 which uses tried and tested Gnome 2 for its desktop manager. You can also try another distro like Arch.

I would state, "Don't bother running ubuntu". Period. It is crap.

That's a bit harsh. While it isn't one of my favorites, I wouldn't say it's crap.

Thanks for the info ya'll.. i should have tried the old gnome desktop again but ubuntu pushed it as the default. i'm going back to the text only server mode for ubuntu and i put windows 7 back on the e350. flies again really quick on windows 7. AMD does a nice job w drivers on it too.

i noticed today that the top supercomputers in the world all run linux so its got huge potential aka apple IOS, android, and OS X Lion are all very nice and it must be down to the deep hardware support by very capable people who demand a paycheck.

who among you has felt the ubuntu pain? hours searching for a code snippet to fix some useless bug like wifi fail or vnc not working etc...

Konoii, what about arch? why is it superior to ubuntu?

My comment WAS indeed a bit harsh and I do apologise.
What I failed to convey was that I do not like *nix distros that try to be Win-Like.

People need to forget the fear, man-up (or chick-up biggrin.gif ), and MAKE THE JUMP.

As (i think) I previously stated, the only apps I run on Win are cubase and games.

Yes... there is a learning curve - especially if you go for a so-called geeky-distro like slacky or Arch.

I have no (0, nada, zilch) experience of Arch, but have been a happy-slacker for some years now. Hell, even my beautiful Slacky configures the desktop now! eek.gif whereas it used to just leave you at a root cmd-prompt.

I LOVE linux, I LOVE windows 7.

IT IS HONESTLY NO MORE DIFFICULT TO LEARN NIX THAN WIN!

It is just that I feel I learn a lot more about my system when working in slacky than in Win; and THAT is why *untu gets on my nerves. STOP trying to be another OS - show your true-colours and get over yerself.

People fear what they [i[percieve[/i] to be more difficult than their comfort-zone, and, for my money, the more slackers and archers we have, the more educated, savvy, aware, and security-conscious we will become (as a collective.) - also the more empowered we will become given that our OS is OURS to manipulate, rather than our OS manipulating us.

Sorry I was harsh on *untu - but hopefully this post clears that up.
