phenom II x4 955be < intel dual core ??!

Thread Starter
I was planning on the phenom II x4 955be thinking it had so much of hype behind its performance but when everyone pushed me to go for an intel system instead.. just started to do some comparison online.. n came to see that the closest match (in terms of price) to the 955be was the i3 2100. just having 2 cores !
Upon seeing some benchmarks, im totally taken back by the i3 2100's performance! Though the 955be has 4 cores, it does not perform as good as the 955be in games..
Is this a good reason for me to ditch the 955 be ?
I'm not sure if / how the 4 cores would actually benefit me in performance ?

Thanks !

The i3 has a different architecture. The 4-core i5-2500k (based on the same architecture) can even beat Intel's current "high tier" processor, the i7 990x with 6 cores (and HyperThreading, which emulates 2 virtual cores per physical core, so you get "12" cores) and AMD's Phenom x6 with 6 cores (except on highly threaded applications, but on most games and regular apps it'll win).

The i3 also has HT, so it'll emulate a quadcore (and performance isn't so bad really). At the moment, the only reason to go AMD is if you're building a high tier system on a budget (like a 6-core rig)

If you plan to fully use the 4 cores, in true multithreaded apps, the AMD processor will win. But overall, the i3-2100 is the winner.

EDIT: Unless you plan to OC (thanks jach11). On a non-K processor (like that i3), you won't be able to OC (if you get a 5% increase you'd be darned lucky) but on the x4 you'd be lucky to not get at least 800 MHz, making it better value against the i3.

Id go with the 955.Can you even overclock the 2100? A 955 @ 3.8Ghz would defiantly be better than a dual core.

Thanks for those amazingly fast replies !

I would like to first understand what user operations would exactly fit into the term "multi-threaded or highly threaded"..

And benchmarks dont exactly = real world performance.

I would still say a quad core AMD PHII x4 955 beats an i3-2100 in real world performance, but its basicly like this.

AMD = Best value for money
Intel = Usually just overall better.

If your on a budget A 955 would do you more good, sense with good cooling and a good mobo you can easily OC it at least 800mhz with a good chip.

Video encoding/Decoding/Converting is one I believe.

i have the same problem too refer to this thread the reason i3 is better is that its a better architecture i.e. 32nm and amd is a 45nm architecture another thing is that if u are planning to overclok keep in mind the core i3 is one of the toughest thing around u can rise blck more then 8 to 10 mhz and the multipliers are locked where as the 955 BE as unlocked multipliers and is easly overclocked to 3.8ghz ay stock cooler and i guess the volts tooo The core i3 is still going to be seen as a quad core by the game anyway due to the HT and if the TDP is considered then i perfer core i3 bcoz its takes 65watts at max and the 955 take shocking 125w as the phenom II x4 series Black editions do and after overclocking it to ~4ghz will take around 200 watts

Some games (like Battlefield 2) do use more than one core (in fact, it uses up to four cores). Most modern games (2010 and newer, like Far Cry 2
and Metro 2033) do use at least 2 cores.

Other apps that come to my head that are multithreaded are compression software (WinRAR), video playback/edit software and distributed computing.

A Intel 2100 2core / 4 thread CPU performs very similar to a PII X4 955.. CLICK HERE

In some tests Intel is faster and in some AMD but they perform pretty much on pair..

But for single threaded programs and in games Intel 2100 is faster and better than AMD..

CHEERS..
