phenom II x4 955be < intel dual core ??! - Page 2

Okay.. guess im getting somewhere now.

1. I would not OC my CPU.. simple cuz im not comfortable with it ! (unless someone here can guarantee that OC'ing it will cause no harm to the system.. without any additional cooling)

2. I'm building a budget PC that would be used for, lets say...

- gaming
- multi-tasking as in -
. (there are atleast 40 tabs open at any time in my browser) + installing apps + hd video playback or heavy gaming + file transfers happening bt. comps connected to my home network

3. Being a budget PC, I would not spend on any additional cooling.. apart from the stock cooler.. + i'm planning to go for the corsair cx 430 v2 PSU. Will this cooling + power setup suffice for an OC'ed 955be ?

4. So, is it confirmed that the i3 2100 < OC'ed 955be even for gaming ? (which are not multi-threaded I trust ?)

NO..

A Intel 2100 is better for gaming..

As you're not a overclocker 2100 is perfect for your needs..

And it's cheap too..

CHEERS..

hmm.. but someone here said games have already started to make use of the multiple cores. so, what if a couple of months down the lane.. there comes a game that makes use of 4 cores..! would not the 955be win here ?

Well they both have different architecture's, so there are different performance levels.

if a game needed 4 physical cores to be maxed out then yes its most likely the 955 would be better, however by the time most gamer's have more than 4 physical core's the 955 will be completely out-dated.

At least with the i3-2100, you will be able to upgrade to a better socket 1155 processor.

Yes, but the improved architecture of the i3 would somewhat soften the hit. Hell, i can max most games on a previous-gen i3. Plus, with the new socket you can upgrade processor at any time.

If you do not plan to OC, the i3 is your best bet. Just get a nice video card (GTX 460's are good bang for the buck, just be sure to get a 1 GB one) and 4 GB RAM and you'll be set.

Other apps that come to my head that are multithreaded are compression software (WinRAR), video playback/edit software and distributed computing.
Does video playback also come under multi-threading ? like a VLC/GOM player ?
I'm also interested to know what would / should i be spending on to keep an OC'ed 955 be stable ? any additional cooling required ? or should the stock just be fine..

If you wanted to keep a 955 stable with lets say 4Ghz, A hyper 212+ (25 dollars) would pretty much be all you will need.

OC's vary though. And even if you dont want to OC, I would still throw out that stock cooler.

Stock is meh. Best bang for the buck cooler is the Cooler Master Hyper 212+. But for stock speeds stock cooler is just fine, even tho i'd discard it.

Plus, there are guides to optimize video playback using the GPU, be it Intel, AMD or Nvidia so you get more quality, but for just standard playback it does use the CPU cores (i know MPC and VLC do)

- I'm aware that the am3 socket is getting out-dated already. So, what are the processors that I could possible look at from the 1155 socket a couple of years (atleast 4) down the line ? sorry about the ignorance on intel sockets.. been with AMD for the past 8 yrs

- Well, i've decided to settle with the Radeon 6770 1gb & a corsair 2GB xms

Also, Now that im considering on a intel pc after almost a decade pls. enlighten me with the mobo options.. i've always been comfy with an AMD + asus combo. should I stick to the Asus for the i3 as well or go for the Intel mobo's ?
Budget for the mobo : 80 - 85 US $ (pls. dont laugh at me if its impossible to build an intel pc @ this rate !)
